Attic Conversion

Thanks to all who updated and adviced me on this post. My attic work is starting soon and the guy is charging (€18,000). I have seen his work in few houses in our neighbourhood and looks outstanding.
The only issue I see if he demands CASH ONLY payment. I want to know is it normal practice to save on VAT.:)
Any drawbacks on such transactions?

This post explains the negatives of 'cash only' payments. Not recommended, especially on AAM.

Undergoing a similar Attic Conversion elak3r. Dont know where to start.Would be very interested in the breakdown of costs if possible? Live in waterford area also. What builders did you contact? Thank you for any help.
 
Sorry could one of you guys explain what is an RSJ (roof supporting joists?) and also what is prefabricated roof trusses used in modern houses. When ye say modern from the 1990's or earlier?

RSJ = rolled steel joist. Basically a steel girder.

Trusses are the pre-assembled roofs you will see arriving on the back of a lorry

Can anyone recommend some one that does attic conversion and don't rip you off ... I am getting mad quotes > 20K ..

hi, That seems like a very steep price. I got my attic converted by a carpenter in lucan for 14'000. Three bed semi-d also. I highly recommend him very happy with the job.

I am based in Knocklyon , Scholardstown road. Yes the high quotes are putting me off ...so if anyone who got this job done and were very happy with the work /Trades man Would appreciate if someone could highly recommened some one, That would be GREAT :)

Has anybody got a quote for an attic conversion to a hipped roof to a normal 3 bed semi where you need to move the hotpress or use a spiral staircase in one of the rooms
