Windows (costly!)

Hi Folks,

I've searched for similar threads on Windows, couldn't find any but apologies if I'm going over old ground.

I am attempting to get new windows. 7 big (ish) and 2 small windows, double doors at the back all in white upvc and a wooden front door.

The best quote that I have gotten is for 8,400 this is a bit out of my budget. I have gotten a slightly cheaper quote but the supplier does not remove the old windows which makes up for the difference in price.

Is it possible to do this job for cheaper without hugely sacrificing quality?
Any recommendations on cheaper suppliers?

Thanks (again)

When you say does not remove the windows do you mean the rubbish or do you have to get someone to take out the old windows and clear the way for them to fit the new windows?

The quote of 8,400 IMHO seems very reasonable especially in this SSIA era.

Normally you will have a few offers for removing your old windows from the garden if they are metal. We had vans circling our house when we got new ones and the fitters told us that the guys follow them from job to job!

That is not a bad quote, we have just gotten templeogue windows. 7500 for 4 lge, 3 small and 2 french doors.

Thanks Folks,

I guess I'll just have to bite the bullet!

I meant take away the rubbish... the difference between the quotes was probably what it would have cost me to get rid of the old windows. Not sure I want the hassle.

We just got our windows replaced with brown upvc-5 large windows, 3medium sized, 2 single bathroom windows a back door and 2 french doors with teak window boards too-short of 7,250k in the Kildare area.

The glazier recycles the glass but doesnt take the old wood. For us this wasnt a problem as we will be shortly be getting a skip anyway.

hi
I am looking to get my shabby aluminium windows replaced with double glazed white windows, and I've got quote for 6 windows, porch door and french doors for a mid terrace house. price i got was 4,300 for the lot, but again they don't take away the rubbish. reckon this is a good price but never heard of the company before. they also want a 30% deposit, so i am a bit sceptical - is that the norm?? I found this company on the internet and they don't have a company address, so have been coresponding via e-mail and phone... maybe i am just over wary.....

edit: as a first time poster, just wanted to know if it is ok to mention the company to see if anyone else has had any experience of them?!?! ....don't want to go posting something on my first day and get in trouble!!!

thanks
EB

Hi Elmo,

Welcome to AAM.

IMHO that quote sounds very cheap. 30% deposit seems excessive. You should start a new thread and no problem in quoting the name of the company purely to see if there are any reviews available on them.

Will the wall that's having the french doors fitted need support i.e. is it a load bearing wall?

before. they also want a 30% deposit, so i am a bit sceptical - is that the norm??

Do you give them the deposit on the day they start. If so that is OK we paid two installments - 2/3rds when starting and the rest on completion

hi sueellen and pinky bear.

Will start a new thread re this company.

Just in response to both your messages, I have breezy patio doors where the french doors are going so hopefully it'll be just a straightforward replacement job. Re the deposit, they didn't actually specify when they want it. I wouldn't be ok with handing over money before I see the goods, but I'll have to ask them again.

My main concern is that they haven't given me a written (on headed paper) quote as other providers quotes have been, but again maybe I'm just being over wary since the swedex incident recently!

Thanks

EB

Thta would worry me too... My brother in law was a day away from giving a deposit to Sweedex windows...They have just gone in to recievership.

Do you mind where are you located? €4k is really cheap...

He was lucky .... I've just read the post about the nightmare time the swedex customers have had....(

I am in Dublin 16. I got a lot of varying quotes, anything from 4k to 8k and I purposely didn't go to some of the bigger name companies who seem to quote massive prices.... then again is 4k too good to be true? they seem to use weatherglaze (that is the brochure i got from them), so I also need to find out if their products are any use..... nothing is simple eh....!!

i got quoted 7000 from o'Gradys in mayo. this included hardwood front door, french doors, back doors and 20 windows of varying sizes. this for black finish . Timber effect was 1500 more. They have a very good name and good after sales service so there some good deals out there

10 windows (8 large, 2 small) 8 grand in Fairco is what I paid.

You should not base the whole thing on the price IMO - look at the quality - how much space between the panes, do they have Argon gas inside, and the rating of the glass. I found (or at least believe what I was told) that Fairco matched these attributes - though looking at the prices in this thread I probably paid a bit more.

Thanks again for the help folks,

Just rang Fairco to arrange a quote... they're offering 25% off if you get the windows fitted before end of June.

Seems a little tight timewise but worth getting a quote anyway.

I think that is a "continous" offer as we had a quote from them and were told there was a special on if we got the windows in in April.

They were also €3K dearer than Templeogue, the guarentee and u values were also not as good as templeogue..

I'd take the 25% with a bit of a pinch of salt - same offer when I was buying their windows - I was told the "original" price for mine was about 11 grand which I seriously doubt was what they were quoting after that "sale".

But very happy with the Fairco windows themselves - they do seem better build than others I've seen.

I checked out as much of the info I could think to ask, including argon fill, guaranteed period, installer insurance, type of glass, security bolts etc. all seems to be good, but the old sceptic in me was waiting for some drawback...!!! I think before I commit I will ring a few more co's just to put my mind at ease....

What was the name of the company that supplied the windows to you. Thanks
