I'm looking at getting a new desktop and Mrs Zag reckons she can't do without Office.

When looking through the Dell site you can select from all sorts of versions of Office, but when you click on the 'more info' link you are just brought to a flashy page saying "Office is cool, trust us" and not to a page that says what is in Basic and the other versions.

I assume the Basic includes Word and Outlook, but the description under the Small Business version is as follows - "For all your home needs:Filing, homework, menus etc! Includes Word, Excel, Outlook and power point". If you need Small Business to get Word & Outlook then something surely is wrong.

Can anyone confirm whether Basic includes these two packages ? I would ring them and ask, but I don't have 90 minutes free to spend on hold.

Incidentally - does anyone know of any other good deals (around the €700 mark) which include Word, Outlook, 2G RAM and a monitor ?

Basic includes Word, Excel and Outlook.
Small business edition includes the above plus Powerpoint, Publisher and Accounting Express.
 
You should also note that the first time you use Office 2007, you will say b***** H*** where are all the menu options gone to. Or words to the same effect. :)

Im a sales agent in Dell so I knows me stuffs.

what, in simple terms, can the Pro edition do, that the small business can't? The functionality of both look v. similar
 
It just adds access (database program) and XML (for building a website) to the Small business edition thats bout it really .
 
Hi Rover 45, Is it possible to buy Access on its own and how much. I learned a little abut database but I find there is only the wizard on my dell and not what I had learned in classes. I would like to refresh database and have a book but the stuff is not on the computer

I was the exact same! Swore blind I'd never get the hang of the new interface but two months in and I've never made so much use of the extra features in office. Excell is now actually easy to use too!
 
How about the free Open Source alternatives. OpenOffice, Thunderbird, Firefox?

For a free program it does what it says on the tin and if you know about computers you're sorted but I've used it in an office where some computers had Word and some had OpenOffice and it was a complete nightmare. Word users couldn't open docs saved in the open office format (something the new word can now do) etc.

As much as I dislike Microsoft they really got it right with Office and I do think it's worth investing in.
 
Wheels I take your point about interoperability with Word. In fairness it's an all but imposible task to have 100% compatability with a propietary binary format. For people however buying a cheap laptop for some simple home stuff (spreadsheets, letters etc) it is sufficent and at least worth a look at.

I think Student and Teacher is the 2003 version.

Office 2007 Home and Student is [broken link removed] and this is perfectly legal for home use.

Comes with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Powerpoint, Microsoft Word, Microsoft OneNote (which is useful for students). It doesn't come with Outlook, but who wants to run this at home?

Just use Google Calendar and Google Mail instead.

(And yes, I know you could use Google Sheets etc. but this is a thread about buying Office.)
 
I haven’t used this site, but the prices are good if you have a student ( primary to 3rd level) in the house.

You can also get vista business upgrade for 90 euro
 
What has not been specifically mentioned is that if you buy Microsoft Office Student edition from Komplett you can install it on 3 PCs/laptop in the house (might not apply to you, but it is still cheaper than buying from Dell - not to knock Dell but you are better off buying Office from Komplett or some other similar site as mentioned above). Similar can be said for virus protection (cheaper to buy from web rather than from Dell).

I went with Office Basic from Dell in the end.

I have used Open Office before (as my main word processor application for well over a year) and had no problems with it other than the inability of some other users to understand and accept that MS Word is not the only word processor out there, .RTF files are much more portable than .DOCs, and you don't have to pay for a fully functioning word processor. I have to say that MS have done an excellent job of spreading fear, uncertainty and doubt to the extent that people (like me) will willingly pay over €100 to get functionality that can be had for free.

In this case though, I had to give in since Mrs Zag occasionally uses the home machine for work purposes and she couldn't afford to do hours of work at home and then find that Word couldn't import or render some of the layout and detail. I regard this as a failing of Word, not Open Office but the MS FUD-machine has spinned this to the degree that people think it is a failing of Open Office.

I did look at various sites like Peats, Komplett (or so I thought) and they all seemed determined to sell me Office for something like €400 or so which was almost as much as the rest of the PC was going to cost.

I don't think it's about fear at all. Office is a fantastic suite and 2007 has (in my experience) completely changed the way I do business simply because of its overhaul. Because you pay for it they are able to put the time, effort and money into each new product and really improve on it. Office has been around for years and .doc has become standard because of this, that's not fear and uncertainty, it's laziness on peoples parts who don't want to learn how to change a default setting or a save as function. How can MS be blamed for that?

Again, I don't see how that's fair. In my experience I've rarely found MS has lost the changes but that it was simply down to two different softwear packages that handle things in a different way. I'm all for open source softwear, I've removed all desktop and start menu traces of IE in my office and replaced it with Firefox because it is a superior browser but I do think there comes a point where you get what you pay for.

Most of those people will be fine with Works which comes free.
