Hi.

Am heading to Westport Sat morning from Dublin. The AA are recommending Longford / Castlebar route. Has anyone gone as far as Tubbercurry in Sligo and then to Westport from there....is it a better route. Also, the AA say the Longford / Castlebar route takes 3 1/2 hours..is this accurate?

Thanks,

Firefly.

Last time I took that trip, I tried the Sligo option.
Took just as long at 4hrs 10 mins, but roads were better, less villages to go through, generally less stressful.

Trip time will depend much on when you travel...and how you drive. But I'd allow about 4 hours +

3.5 is about right... I drive this route fairly regularly.

I always go via Longford but make sure you bypass the main street as it often gets backed up.

Now that Edgeworthstown is bypassed too it's quite a pleasant drive. The roads from Roscommon onwards aren't the best until you enter P. Flynn territory where you'll have highways you've never seen the like of!

In general I find very few delays in the villages en route...

Thank God for P Flynn or we would have nothing down here so roll on Enda to finish the roads Pee ran out of time for.

I travel this route regluarly , if traveling from Dublin the motor way to Mullingar and good road to Longford is great , Strokestown to Ballaghadreen is the worst road . can do in 3 hours non stop (not driving like a nutter) or 3 1/2 hours with a pit stop .

Good God why go through Tubber, unless you are going to Ballina?
Although if plenty of time you could go long way through Ballina, Crossmolina, Newport and into Westport.

Also beware speed trap on nice section of road into Strokestown out of Tarmonbarry. Quite easy to be doing 115kph on this section of road as one of only decent sections in all of Roscommon hence they stationed on it a lot.
Also beware of speedtraps between Swinford and Castlebar.
Watch out for speeds around Turlough, Ballyvary, Boholla.

Excuse me Maggie but P Flynn only bothered doing the roads around Castlebar since he was a Mayo West TD for much of his time. Don't remember him doing much for the East of the county?

Thanks for those guys...will be travelling early Sat morning so I'll be mindful of the speed traps;)
