Haggling on the cash offer!

Hi,

I have found an excellent low mileage 2006 Toyota Avensis Aura 1.6 with perfect history. I know the arguments against a 1.6 on previous threads, but, from a car tax point of view and having driven it, it will more than meet my needs (I have a juice guzzling 2.3 turbo speed trap sucker at present that has cost me a stack of money!).

My problem is how far do I come down in the cash offer for this car? It's 20 years since I bought cars regularly and am just out of touch with the car trade. The asking price is €23900. What do you more experienced bargain hunters recommend?
 
there is a Car Valuer on and it gives the following info

Average Price for 2006 Toyota Avensis in Ireland: €25,164
 
Is it a private sale or purchase from dealer?
I found that CBG/CarZone websites are full of adds from dealers, so average price from CBG would be "dealers average asking price"..

I would try to knock at least 10% from asking price considering no trade in.
 
The dealer (if you ask for his best price) will probably knock off at least a 1,000 on a 23,000 car. If your haggle good you might get another 500-1000 off.

If it is a dealer car, you need not assume that cash is more attractive. Many dealers make as much from selling finance as they do from selling cars.

It was sourced from a main Toyota dealer through a friend and mechanic in the motor trade. He checks out the car for me, but, gets nothing on the deal (I know this is hard to believe in Celtic Tiger Ireland!).

If I got 10% I feel I would be more than happy!
 
It sounds expensive to me, compared to the new list price (€25k?).

But then all Toyota main dealer prices are expensive. Having said that, cars that new are likely only to be found in main dealers.

I'd press hard for at least 10% off what they're asking and see what happens.

I don't think you will gain an awful lot by changing to a 1.6 Avensis. A mate of mine recently traded in his 05 Avensis because it drove him mad. Absolutely no power and he struggled to get 30mpg from it. If fuel economy and driving pleasure is your thing go for a 2.0 t/diesel instead. All of the thrills without the bills.
