Calling all woodworkers! Anyone got any experience with Tormek wet grinder, in particular the lower budget 1200 model? Are they worth the money??

Hi Carpenter,

I have the [broken link removed], and I'm very happy with it. Comes with a book and DVD which show you all you need to know about sharpening and honing all manner of tools. There's a decent range of accessories too, your kitchen knives will never be dull again. (dull as in unsharp, not uninteresting!)

Granted, the only other system I've used is an oil stone and honing guide, but the Tormek takes all the work out of sharpening.

Thanks Leo, the 1206 model is the one I'm interested in as opposed to the bigger, more expensive 2006. Have you purchased any additional jigs/ accessories and would you recommend any in particular (it's an expensive set-up)?

I recently got the jigs for long a short knives, but that's it. I don't do any carving or turning, so the standard kit is all I needed. The 2006 is pretty much the same set-up, but has a more powerful continuous rated motor more suited to a commercial shop.

Cheers Leo, I was thinking of getting those jigs myself, I see that they do a "home craftsman kit" with those and the diamond stone grader and silicon carbide stone; I think it adds another €100 to the cost of the machine but it seems to be the way to go. Thanks for the feedback.

Yeah, just saw that kit there when I was looking up the link. Wasn't available when I was purchasing or I would have gone for it. Looks to be good value.

Enjoy!

I've got the Tormek 1206, tried it out on a few kitchen knives first. Very impressive alright, although I think I'll need to get the stone grader as the cut is very abrasive (on stainless steel anyway) without it. My only negative point would be that I think the system shouldn't really be sold without the stone grader- especially when the instructions explicitly state that you need this to refine the edge. As soon as I have that I'll be trying it out on my plane irons and chisels.

A little box of goodies arrived from Axminster today, I'll be sharpening every scissors in the house tonight!

Unfortunately the mind was strong but the body was weak- I didn't have the energy to actually do a whole lot with the gear afterwards, too tired after a hard Monday; however I did experiment with my first Japanese waterstone, yipee!
