Removing asbestos ceiling

Has anyone recent experience of removing asbestos ceilings? I've bought a house in Dublin (Marino) and it has asbestos in the upstairs (and possibly downstairs) ceilings. I'm wondering about reasonable costs for removing/replacing the ceilings and if there are options to choose between for the replacement.

Thanks for any advice.

Apologies if I'm stating the obvious but you should not tackle this yourself and should get experts in. I guess you know that asbestos dust can be carcinogenic?

Firstly, I would check with a contractor on this. Asbestos has to be removed by a qualified and licensed firm. You can get advice on the HSA website

Yeha, I intend getting it done by contractors. I'm wondering what sort of price I should expect and whether there is a range of ceiling replacement options of which I should be aware. And anything else that people have come across while having asbestos removed.

Firstly you need an asbestos survey to acertain the level and type of asbestos.

the the HSA has to be informed on a downloadable form, there is a 28day period between notifuication and been allowed to commence work.

The work has to be carrie dout by certified contractors based on the findings of the survey.

bottom line is its not cheap

A guy called Pat Kane (I think) got rid of an upstairs asbestos ceiling for us about a month ago. In thin sheets held up with battens, very brittle. €3,500 incl VAT to seal house c/w specialist dust extraction filters, showers etc, remove asbestos, certify and supply test results from swabs taken post removal. Took around 4 days. Very professional. Waste shipped to Germany. Costs around 700-1k for licenced disposer to remove but you have to bag and bring waste to them yourself, get cert from council when moving hazardous asbestos waste etc. Overall better left to the experts! Get back to me if you want his ph nr.

Hi Skippy, welcome to AAM. In accordance with the posting guidelines, could you confirm whether you have any association with the above other then being a satisfied customer?
Thanks,
Leo

I think from Skippy's post it's pretty clear he's just a satisfied customer...a touch trigger happy Leo, would you not agree?
Well done Skippy...handy to have such an up to date recommendation.

No I wouldn't! :D We have had many similar posts here from people who pretend to be satisfied customers but after investigation turn out to be promoting their own services.

A poster who registers to respond to a three month old thread always sets the alarm bells going.

Thanks for that Skippy1. We got it removed last month by a company called Willich. Upstairs and downstairs, including removal of the covering plasterboard ceilings downstairs, cost us 6300 inc VAT. We had no complaints about the work and it all took 6 days. (And, no, I have no association with the company other than paying them to take away our potentially poisonous ceilings)

The HSA was very helpful in explaining the differences between different companies interpretations of the guidelines. The removal company needs to submit a plan of work a month in advance, but the HSA can issue a waiver if it's a "standard" job. The HSA person we dealt clarified a lot and was very prompt in dealing with our request.

also been looking at a house in Marino, what would the ccost be roughly of replacing the insulation when the asbestos is removed?

to 'anotheralias'-- i'm also looking at a house in marino with asbestos ceilings..would you have a contact no. for Willich to get a quote? thanks, g..
