Can someone help ?

BOI suspended the use of my ATM card. Have to go to bank when I require to withdraw funds etc.

Suspension was imposed as I defaulted on my credit card repayments.

It went legal and I have now reached an aggrement with BOI solicitors to make monthly repayments.

Contacted the bank but they will not let me use my ATM card until entire arrers are paid.

Is this move on BOI behalf legal ?

Can you change your current account to another bank and then get an ATM card with them?

You can change banks no problem but bear in mind that they will do a credit check on you and can refuse to open the account if they feel you may be a liability. Do you need the account for payments to go into ? I would try opening elsewhere if this is the case as you have nothing to lose in trying to open an account. As stated it seems a bit silly not to allow you use the ATM as you cant overdraw anyway. Try the credit union perhaps also as you need to take your business elsewhere.

Do some Credit Unions now have ATMs?
No, but they do accept electronic payments if the OP needs an account and they may be a little more forgiving on new accountees.

But the OP would still have to go into the CU to withdraw funds. Also, can DDs SOs etc be paid from a CU account?

A number of credit unions have ATM facilities, including my local one.

Can you clarify

Do CUs offer CU branded ATM cards;

or

Do some CUs have ATMs inside/outside the branch?

I was withdrawing cash at an ATM this morning and saw an icon for a Credit Union ATM card which I wasn't aware existed (there was a also an icon for a TSB branded card-NOT ptsb-which I would have thought defunct at this stage).

Agreed - I was thinking more in the lines of refusing to deal with BOI and moving. I would be pretty annoyed if it was me and would certainly seek a move despite any inconvenience.

Speaking as a banker, accounts only go to the legal dept after a serious amount of neglect.

I don't see how you can blame the bank for a problem you caused yourself !

I'm sure BOI would have no problem with you moving your a/c's as soon as you pay off your debts. People seem to forget that problem a/c's actually cost the bank money, as well as the hassle of having to contact the legal dept everytime you want to withdraw funds, so they're quite happy to see them go elsewhere.
