Can anyone recommend a free anti virus that can be downloaded from the internet. Any recommendations previously on AMM v dated. What else do I need to keep my system/internet protected?

Avoid Norton, whatever you do. I put Norton Internet Security on my laptop and desktop and both have slowed to a crawl since.

Whatever you do avoid Comodo anti-virus. I used their free firewall without problems but then I made the mistake of downloading their free anti virus and my system froze completely. When we finally got it fixed, I decided that skimping on anti virus is no saving.

I've got McAfee now, had Norton before Comodo but 2 viruses got in.

Are these compatible with vista? Don't seem to be downloading properly.

I'd at least wait until service pack one before installing Vista.

A while after Microsoft release a new operating system, they generally release a bunch of fixes or patches for all the problems that crop up.

This is called a 'service pack'.

I'd either go back to winxp or wait for at least the first service pack to be released.

Perhaps the poster has got a new computer with it pre-installed. Perhaps theres no XP to go back to. :)

I use AVG, Spybot, ZoneAlarm, Spyware Blaster. Usually use Firefox and not IE. But regularly clear both of all downloaded data, passwords, cookies, caches etc. You'd have to check yourself which ones are Vista Compatible. But they are all free.

I have Kaspersky on laptop got it for $26/€20 on e-bay.Its the full version and completely automatic. It definitely works with vista, have a look on the Kaspersky website. You can get a 15 day free trial too.

AOL Antivirus Shield is free and uses a (cut down?) version of the Kaspersky engine so it might be worth checking. See [broken link removed] and [broken link removed] for more info.

any opinions on e-trust antivirus? Came free with PC, Expiring in a few days. Worth paying for or should I switch to something else?

It is the one used by Microsoft internally for staff, and has a solid reputation. I thought I read something about MS providing free updates to eTrust recently?

I use the following;

Zonealarm, AdAware, SpyBoy, and AVG

I also also use Mozilla Firefox as the internet browser.

No problems on laptop bought in January this year.

Pugwall: Excellent Choice - have it on my wife's laptop.

Regularly scan with Spybot Search and Destroy (an Irish product!!!) and Lavasoft Ad-Aware.

But Checkpoint ZoneAlarm and AVG are excellent!

Sorry to hyjack the thread a little but what is the difference between sing IE and Firefox? Is one more secure than the other? I only use IE, is this making me an easier target?
