Best route Dublin - Dungarvan (avoiding Waterford)?

I'm wondering what the best route is to take to avoid going through Waterford itself, when heading for Dungarvan?

I'm thinking the easiest is to take the N9 all the way to the edge of Waterford and then try and find some way of going around. Is the by-pass complete yet? If not what roads should I take instead?

go dublin to thomastown, just far side of thomastown go right towards carrick on suir and on into dungarvan that way

And stop off for a bite to eat in the middle of Carrick on Suir where there is a lovely pub on the corner that does nice food. Outdoor seating too with parking nearby and nice village green across the road we did these when travelling from Tullamore to Dungarvan via Kilkenny and CoS.

Or for a slight variation on this go via Kilkenny (either on the N9/10 or via Athy on the N77/8 - it's much of a muchness really I think) ... then from Kilkenny head on the N76 towards Clonmel (this is a pretty good road)- cut off it for Carrick on Suir (it passes a few miles North of Carrick, not through it)... and then take the road south from Carrick (the R676 which is a pretty poor road) to meet the main Waterford-Dungarvan Road.

This is the route I take whenever we go to East Cork from Dublin. Traffic is much lighter and it's a nice drive.

Avoid Thomastown if at all possible - very bad traffic backlogs - a truck knocked the side off a house recently in the town and there have been tailbacks since as there are now temporary traffic lights in operation.

Safe Journey!

I vote for this route. I know better than I know the back of my hand ;). I disagree about the Carrick Lemybrien road (R676). I thinks it's great - good surface (thanks to Le Tour) and little traffic.

Cheers for all the suggestions folks. This is the route I eventually went. Although I did panic thinking I was going to get caught in the unfortunate incidents on the M7/N9 until I realised it was all happening on the northbound route (looked quite messy when I passed it by!). Anyway, I enjoyed the drive, Dungarvan is a nice spot. Looked well in the sunshine even if it was a bit hazy!

Although I have to agree with EvilDoctorK above, that R676 is not great (I think it was the R676?...). Very uneven surface which tends to throw the car around a lot. I have very wide low profile tyres and they just follow every contour in the surface and it was quite uncomfortable at times.
