Phoning home from Mauritius

Hi,

Myself and my future wife are heading to Mauritius for our honeymoon in August and we are wondering about phoning home from there. We know the hotels are really expensive to use out there. Has anyone been there and phoned home? Are there cards available? We have two young kids so we will be phoning quite often.

if mobile phone is out of the question because of cost, we used to have an Eircom calling card and its linked to your home bill. Its like a credit card and has a number with pin and you just dial home using a special number and its charged to your home bill.

You can set up a SKYPE account and call a landline number for 1.7cent a minute. Although broadband access might be an issue over there. I use skype all the time for long distance

I used skype for free when I was recently in the US (Skype to Skype). Setup an account for my wife and got hear a webcam for the home pc and then I could chat to her & the kids using free skype with webcam daily. It was great for them to see me and vice versa.
MSN also works on the same principle.

Check with your hotel if they have broadband and an internet cafe on site.

Yes skype can be free when skype to skype, but my point is that it can be used to dial 'normal' landline numbers at low cost also, which some people don't realise....it also cuts out some of the hassle for the people receiving the call as they don't need to install skype and be online when taking a call..

DO NOT USE YOUR MOBILE. Similar to yourself we went and phoned home to our daughter everyday. Cost €280 in mobile charges.

Hi Colin,

I was in Mauritius nearly 2 years ago and there was little, if any broadband availability so I don't think SKYP is an option.

There are plenty of prepaid calling cards available and we used one of these (I can't remeber which brand, sorry). Be sure to check out the calling rates from your hotel though, some charge a 'surcharge' even though you are phoning a free phone number to use the calling cards.

Have a wonderful time!

What you mean is don't use an irish mobile.

The link I quoted offers incoming calls for €0.19 and calls to Ireland for €0.79
I have found them cost effective when roaming.

Apologies - Dont use your irish mobile as normal - roaming charges.
