pvc window locks trouble

Hi noticed several of the handles on our pvc windows were loosening and wouldn't open the window. Tried to tighten the screws but despite these being tight the windows won't open. Took off the handle and examined the lock and it just doesn't seem to be engaging with whatever mechanism it should on several windows. The windows were fitted years back, before we moved in. Any simple way of fixing them to open again I wonder? Thanks (one not involving breaking the glass please!!)

Very hard to answer a question like that without seeing the windows,is the square bar from the handle engaging in the window?
