Rear-ended but no visible damage

My wife's car was rear-ended yesterday while she was waiting at a red light. There did not appear to be any external damage. The other driver said she was sorry and they exchanged insurance details and telephone numbers. Noone was hurt in all of this although my wife's colleague (also in the car) initially complained of a stiff back (she declined the offer to go to a GP though). We now have two concerns...
1/ although there appears to be no visible external damage to the bumper, we are wondering whether to get it checked out anyway at a garage on the basis that there could be internal damage. Is this possible if you can't see anything externally? And would the garage have to strip the bumper to find this out?
2/ so far my wife hasn't contacted our insurance company - mainly on the basis that she didn't see anything wrong with the car and everyone was fine after the incident. But should she do so anyway on the basis that she had another person in the car at the time who presumably could decide she's suffered some sort of personal injury at a later date?
 
Lift up the carpet in the boot and check the boot floor for damage. Assuming everything is okay, I'd ring the third party to reassure them that you don't intend claiming. So far as your wife's passenger is concerned, I'd give the third party her number - that way it's out of your wifes hands whether she decides to claim or not.
 
If I were you I would -
(1) Report it to a Garda Station. Who knows - the car driver who hit you could give a different account of what happened.
(2) Report to your insurance company. The other driver or your passenger may make a claim for injury later.
(3) Get your mechanic to examine your car.

As above, when you go to the station bring your insurance cert and drivers licence as you will have to produce these. The Garda you will be dealing with can request production of licence and insurance from the other driver to make sure they are who they say they are and also to make sure they are insured to drive the vehicle in the first place.
 
get your car checked and report the incident to your local garda station..if not,the incident could come back to haunt you,believe me.
 
friend of mine could see no visible damage to a car after being rear ended. Garage took a look at it....showed him that underneath the boot it car was crumpled and it was 2.5k for ti to be fixed. Energy of an impact has to be absorbed somewhere and in his case, can't remember what car he had, the car was designed to give in underneath the boot area...
 
Thanks for all your comments. Car has since been looked at by a bodywork place and by my mechanic who agree it has escaped damage. Thankfully.
