Smaller Diesel Engines

How come some manufacturers like Opel and Volvo have brought smaller diesel engines to the market and others have not? For instance you can get a 1.6 D Volvo V50 but the VW Jetta only comes with a 1.9TDi engine.
Surely its in VW's interests to start coming up with a smaller diesel engine or have they plans ? Thanks.

Other countries don't have the same car tax regime we have so different market pressures apply.

Agree Tiger but it is not just a question of taxation. There is lower CO2 emissions and better fuel efficiency on the Volvo 1.6D engine than the Jetta 1.9TDi, if one believes the manufacturers specifications. I would have thought such a massive car producer like VW would also be chasing the 'green' car buyer.

Isn't this the same 1.6 diesel engine that is in Citroen and Ford. According to Wikipedia it's also in the Mazda 3.

Yep. They are very good engines too. Right for penal irish tax and insurance conditions.
