Tesco deal today is buy 12 cans of Guinness or Budweiser, get 12 free.

I hear that the VFI have come out against this, saying it's irresponsible and fostering a culture of binge drinking.

What do people think?

Eh, talk about the deal of the week!
Awesome...in moderation of course!

'bout bloody time the VFI members need a good kick for a change!!!!

I suppose they have to do something. Especially now with Bupa back on the scene. :D

(A pity it's bud and not nice beer they're doing the offer on - maybe next week)

IIRC Lidl will be doing a special on various beers / pils / lagers over the weekend

No doubt this is how Tesco like to respond

They did the same sort of thing one weekend when Supervalu had a Stella promo.

This will have no impact on the VFI.

A pub is the last place to go for cheap drink.

Guy on RTE radio this evening from VFI said that you could buy large bottle of COke and get 5 glasses in his pub and it wouldn't cost the €5 it costs for 2 cokes in most pubs. Wonder where that is?

Don't agree with the VFI here but certainly if a pub ran a promotion like this most of the country would be up in arms, what prevent people (young or old) buying these and drinking on the streets?

the smoking ban was the greatest thing ever introduced in ireland....
for years pubs did not invest for thier customers, by installing additional services in their premises, ie, outside seating, lareg screen tv's for sports, food, beer gardens, BBQ's in summer time etc..... the prices keep going up, and they blame the smoking ban, then they blame drink driving clamp down effecting the business, even though it was there all along, i know not enforced as much until recently..

publicans want it all their own way, high prices, give out about other shops and off licence when they get a chance. then they have the cheek to charge people more for a pint of coke than a pint of beer !!! i wonder ??

if a pub ran a promotion like this
I remember going to many a 'happy hour' in my youth. We used to buy 4 pints at a time at half price. (Four at a time because it took so long to queue up.)

They were also obviously watered down, which was just as well.

Drinking on the streets/in public places is actually an offence in most areas. That isn't to say that the law is enforced at all times.

Also, it's interesting to note that many VFI members are part of the VFI-sponsored off-licence chain called Next Door.

I see MASS (not sure what it stands for but they are against the alcohol ravished society we live in, apparently!) are also complaining about the ADs...
Anything that gets the up the noses of the Vinters/VFI is good as far as I am concerned.
What the VFI doesn't realise is that there is a revolution going on at present regarding alcohol and how people consume it. They are dinosaurs clinging to the past...

Its MEAS actually (means respect in Irish) and in this context stands for Mature Enjoyment of Alcohol in Society.
I suppose they are anti the whole binge drinking thing but they aren't calling for prohibition or anything.

MEAS are financed and organised by the Drinks Industry including the LVA & VFI
