Playstation 3 - NY

Hi, I'm thinking of buying a playstation 3 in NY later this year.

I'll need a power converter - but will there be any video issues on European TV's?

Does it mean I can only play US games or will European work on it?

Thanks

According to the article below the PS3 games will be multi-region plus you won't even need a power converter.

Basically, we Europeans are getting shafted on the price as it is the exact same console as in the Japanese market. In fact, it is a slightly lesser machine due to the lack of a hardware based solution to backwards compatability with PS2 games. So it is very unfair that we should be expected to pay so much more.

Power converters are a thing of the past. Most power supplies are now rated 110v-240v 50/60 hz
However I was under the impression that there will be region protection on all games so game here wouls not work on a machine bought in the states.

On the Right Hook last night they had a feature about the PS3...one of the points they made was US games would not be compatible with one purchased here.

Thanks guys.

Not a hope in hell I'm buying this Europe - even if the price drops.

Worst release of a product EVER!

I haven't looked into it a whole lot but will probably buy one. When I heard the price I was pretty shocked but is it not because it's a blu-ray/HD DVD player as well? These are pretty expensive so is it that bad?
I mean generally...obviously the price differential from the US to here is crazy!

Will Blu-Ray disks be region coded?

Although the PS3 games will play on the US console, you may have to stick to US disks to watch films.

There seems to be a lot of misinformation going around about this console.
As I said before, on the Right Hook they said US games wouldn't be compatible with an Irish console. In FHM they say the opposite (which seems to be true)
I've also seen that PS and PS2 games will not work on the PS3 which also seems to be untrue.

It depends what your looking for I think. If you just want a games machine then yes, the price is outrageous. However, if you are looking for a machine to play Blu-Ray movies then it is a very reasonable price.

I believe at present the Bluray movie discs do not have region codes even though the facility is there in the players but that this is probably only a temporary situation to encourage take up while the number of titles available is so small but that down the line when they have been around a while region codes are again expected to be used.

Apparently Sony are not allowing the adult industry use Blu-Ray as a platform which may damage its bid to become the dominant format.
I didn't know this but Betamax did the same.

The position with playing previous PS games is that both the Japanese and US versions of the PS3 have the 'Emotion Engine' chip included and is therefore fully backwards compatible. Sony, in their infinite wisdom, has decided that the European PAL PS3 will only emulate the 'emotion' chipset.

Microsoft utilised this option in the Xbox 360 with regard to Xbox games with the result that there is a finite list of Xbox games that the Xbox 360 will play. This is expected to be case for the PS3 in Europe but no-one will really know until it is released and games tested.

Personally, there is no way I will be paying over €700 for a PS3 bundle regardless of what it comes bundled with it. Blu-Ray, HD-DVD who cares? For the vast majority of people DVD's will do nicely.

Blu-Ray discs are region coded:

Region code Area
A/1 North America, Central America, South America, Koreas, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Southeast Asia.
B/2 Europe, Greenland, French territories, Middle East, Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
C/3 India, Nepal, Mainland China, Russia, Central and South Asia.

However, many disks sold are region-free at present.

In terms of standard definition DVD, a US PS3 is likely to be restricted to Region 1 (NTSC) DVDs as well.

Not that either of these facts is much of a deterrent, as US DVDs still tend to have better features and/or come out sooner than European R2 equivalents.

In terms of the price, the PS3 is an expensive console, but apart from being the most technologically advanced games console on the market, it has the Blu-Ray player - Blu-Ray likely to be the winner of the High Def format war - also has the potential to be a media hub for your sitting room, with a hard drive and ability to download content from the Net.

Hi, have another compatibility question.

The US Playstation 3 is fully backward compatible. However, will it play
european PS2 games?

I want to apologise before hand for sounding a bit thick.........
I have a japanese supplier who sells the playstation 3. He sells the U.S version and the Japanese version - will the japaneese version work in Ireland?I can get one for €500.
Thank you
