Have just purchased an external dvd/cd rewriter and am having problems trying to do the basics..
I am trying to burn .asf files onto dvd +r disk on the external drive and its looking for (*.bup,*.vob,*.ifo) type files. How do i get an asf to these.
Also, i cant copy a standard dvd across to it either. After going to through the burning process, it throws out the dvd and a dialog box appears saying, no disc available and abort burning. It supports dvd +r/-r(which i also tried without luck). Am i doing something basically wrong???

Well you need to burn a "data dvd" type disk to burn files like that on. If your doing a movie disk it won't work because asf is not a dvd compatible file.

I don't know exactly what you're trying here? But If your trying to copy a dvd (for example one you've just bought) you will need to "rip" it first with DVDShrink

Thanks sn@kebite. When i go into dvdshrink, they all say free download, but when you actually select it, memebership fee paying options come up?? Is there an actually free download option???

You mean here? If you are getting popups looking for money then I wonder if your PC is infected with malware/spyware/adware?

Thanks Clubman. No i'm not getting popups looking for money, i'm just going through the process of downloading and the next steps look for email details and then payment details. It looks pretty structured..

Hi Ed ,

I think you need to consider why you bought this appliance when it is quite apparent you haven't got a bulls notion what you are doing . If you have a brother in I.T. , perhaps you should ask him how to get around this .
you should also give him his bike back y'tosser

If you click on the link that I posted above and then on one of the download target links and still get payment requests then there is something wrong - even if it's not popups then it sounds like it could be adware etc. DVDShrink is free and I see nothing asking for payment.

Update: oh - perhaps you are clicking on the links in the Google ad pane? Don't click on them - click on the download links under DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS FOR DVD SHRINK - the ones with the little USA and other flags beside them: Softpedia Secure Download (US)

Thanks Clubman. That was it alright. Another question re:dvdshrink. Should i select on the open or save option when trying to download it. Should i expect it to be a desktop option and then select it when trying to compress files. Novice to all this side of things, so please bare with me...

I would always select "Save" just seems better for me:) Incase you need to reinstall it or whatever. Just download the .zip file, open it and run the executable by double-clicking.

Someone mentioned that you should get someone to help you if you have no idea of what your doing. That sounds like pretty good advice...unless you're a fast learner. But dvdshrink is xtremely easy to use anyway.

Thanks sn@kebite. Having problems when i'm downloading it as it keeps coming with "the compressed(zipped)folder is corrupted or invalid". Will get some one to have alook at it tomorrow as i'm losing patience fast.

Try a different site or country to download it from. Like the others though I think if you do a short evening course or similar in basic computers you'll pick it up a lot faster than banging your head against a wall. Sign up to an online resource like Experts Exchange to ask loads of questions.
