Hi guys

Mr Ney drives a 06 car, the other night a guy rear-ended him and did some damage to the bumber (dent and quite a few deep scrapes) - the guy didn't want to go through insurance so we agreed to just get damage repaired with the original garage where we got the car. Mr Ney dropped car in to said garage and they spent 20 minutes examining and giving him a quote. They told Mr Ney that he did not need a new bumper and that they could repair the existing bumper completely, they gave him a written quote for the work and the person who rear-ended him paid Mr Ney in full and also for the hire of a car for the day. Mr Ney dropped the car in this morning to be repaired and was told by the garage that actually they would only be able to repair most of the bumper, some scratches would have to be left on it, the guy said that he didn't see some of the scratches when doing the quote as there was some dirt on the car at the time. He then asked Mr Ney would he like a new bumper which is twice the original price quoted and we cannot afford this. We will not go back to the guy who rear-ended us as the money was paid and we all agreed on the figure at the time - but now we are left with scratches on the bumper. My question is, do we have any come back with the garage - I feel that the fact that they didn't see all the damage to the car is not our fault - what do you think??

I'm afraid not. You might call it a quote but we call it an estimate!!!
It's not black and white. Our estimates are all subject to stripping of the car and prices are not agreed in full until near the end of finishing the car.

If this is not written on the estimate you could try and argue it with them but if he just gave you the estimate and didn't even charge you for it we wouldn't entertain you.

I was involved in a very minor accident some time ago where some guy rearended our old car. The garage that gave me an estimate of the damage issued it with the proviso "subject to stripping" so I imagine you're stuck with it. The garage can't realistically be expected to ascertain the extent of damage by a simple visual check only. There's nothing to stop you going back to the other motorist, you've suffered the loss ....

That's a pain. You have no comeback I'd imagine. Tell the garage you are not happy and see if they'll reduce the bill.

If not take it on the chin and move your business elsewhere.

Hi Guys, thanks for the replys

I wouldn't go back to the guy who rear-ended the car, I agreed a price with him and it's not his fault the garage didn't quote correctly. The Estimate (not quote) says this estimate is based on a visual examination only, any extra parts and labour will be in final invoice. My point is that this was a visual examination and these scrapes were clearly visible to the naked eye (he says the car was dirty but surely in the course of examining the car he would have wiped away any dirt from the bumper), he spotted them straight away this morning when the car was left in. The estimate gives the price for 'Repair damage on rear bumper', they have then added on paint and sundries etc so surely under 'repair damage on rear bumper' - that should include all damage? -

A repair to anything plastic and most metal will always leave a mark or two. If they were deep, depending on colour of car etc you will only be left with slight marks.

The bumper was repaired and painted so the marks must be very small, I'd say if you drove it for a while and washed it a few times the shine will go off it and it will all blend in.

But it is true after even the smallest of damage a car is never the same you just have to accept it. Even the best of jobs will show after a while and you will be able to spot something out of place.

I know this doesn't really help you but maybe in the future it may.

Thanks Mr2, I'm going to raise the issue with the garage anyway and sure I'll see what they have to say - all depends on how obvious remaining scratches are.

smashed my toyotal corolla bumper on a loose alsation few years ago. friend took off the bumper ( which he claimed was the hardest bit) took it away for welding and respraying and asked to bring back the car in about 4 days to refit the repaired bumper. looked like new and still does. metallic red and not a mark or scratch in sight. €180 but he was a friend.

it's not his fault the garage didn't quote correctly-

ya but its his fault you got rear ended.

you are entiltled to be fully compensated for your loss. End of....

if you don't go back I cant see why the garage should be held accountable

The only one who should be out of pocket is the guy who did the damage
