Any advice appreciated on how to install spotlights. Is there a special for cutting out the hole in the cealing, & is it easy to do, also how do you connect them . already have some on the landing, do I connect them on to these....Please dont let me blow up!!LOL Thanks in advance

With regard to insulation, what kind of a barrier channel is needed for the wires? This was mentioned elsewhere on AAM.

I will be putting additional insulation into the ceiling of the new build/extension and I will be putting in recessed lights. So, it would seem to defeat the purpose if the insulation were just pulled back. I presume the insulation would go over the barrier channel?

You must not put insulation over recessed spotlights.

There will be a diagram in the instructions giving you minimum clearance above them and yes you must leave a gap in the insulation.

Halogen spotlights are a large generator of heat, heat rises and to cover them with insulation will lead to , at a minimum, the light burning out and possibly your house also.

Yes there is a "hole cutter" available (and no i'm not talking about some mad boss somewhere). Go to B&Q or a good electrical supplier in you are a and just bring one of the fiitngs with you as they are different sizes.

You can get fire hoods for these lights.

The cutters are generally referred to as [broken link removed], check the packaging for your lights to determine the correct diameter.

Thanks! Hav'nt even bought them yet!! ment to say tool cutter for the cealing! will try B&Q, but how do I connect them.....& Yes I will turn off the power!

I presume you will be replacing an existing light fitting with these new downlighters? If so, just connect the existing wires to the appropriate terminals on one of the light fittings, and daisy chain some new 1.5mil twin and earth to the rest.

If you're not replacing existing lights, then it's time for the pros. The golden rule with electricity is: if you;re not sure, get a pro in. A bad job putting these in poses a serious fire risk.

Hiya Leo, Hubby just isint into diy...at all...! because there is always a match on the telly..I on the other hand will have a go at anything! We live 30 miles from the city & always find it hard to find a ..handyman to travel so far. Anyway I bought my spotlights in Homebase( were in waterford for weekend) great price too only 8.99. got my cutting tool, but as luck would have it I forgot to get the extra wire, so will have to wait until next weekend, thanks for all your help...will let you know how I get on!!!

No problem, that's what we're here for. You'd never know, you just might shame the hubby into doing the next job!
