Bus Shelters - why can't they be made vandal proof !?

Hi,
Does anyone know why bus shelters are kept being made with huge panes of 'safety' glass that vandals keep lobbing bricks through? - I walk to work up the Kilmacud Road and the same bus shelter keeps getting vandalised..

Because if they use Plexiglass (or Plexiglas in the USA) the same vandals set fire to it and getting the dried pools of the stuff off the ground is a nightmare. It also gives off mildly toxic fumes.

Surely it can't be beyond the boundaries of human ingenuity to come up with a material that does not shatter and is fire proof ?

Have you seen the old green metal ones - ugly after some graffitti and not conducive to being used as advertising hoardings as most bus shelters are - also opaque sides are conduciive to groups gathering and antisocial activity

They shouldnt need to be. If a certain area is rampant cctv should be installed to catch the culprits and punish accordingly.
Maybe informed education in primary schools would work? It did for me years ago with the anti-litter campaigns.

Maybe from an early age children could be taught by parents to have respect for people and property and lay the basis for the primary school to carry on the education.

That'll never catch on.

Glass must shatter because its safer. If it just broke partially then you are left with jagged pieces which may cause injury etc.

How about making shelters out of vandals!

Nothing, but nothing is vandal proof- we can only make things vandal resistant. Even the most durable or resistant materials can be vanadalized by painting!
