how do I go about this?

All ive recieved in the post is a change of ownership cert from the Dept of the Environment.

Does the dealer I bought the car from send something in to the tax office for me? Im worried as its almost 3 weeks since I bought the car now.

All you need is the ownership form/insurance cart... go to the motor tax office and they will print your tax disc on the spot...

When was/is the tax up on the car?
If the car hasn't been taxed for a while you will need a waiver from the guards I believe saying the car wasn't in use

If the car isn't currently taxed you need a form RF100A. If it has been off the road there is a section on that you get the gardai to sign and then you don't have to pay the arrears.

www.motortax.ie has everything you need I'd say.

The main thing is not to worry.
Get the RF100A form
Ring the Motor Tax Office
They will tell you when last tax expired.
You are only liable for the tax from the date of purchase(If you bought during Jan then you are liable for the full month of Jan etc).
If the tax expired in the months previous to purchase, then as Janet says you get the part of RF100A signed by your local Garda to cover the months of arrears due to previous owner. These are not your responsibility.
The Motor Tax office will tell you the amount of arrears and the amount to cover the future tax period. You acn then just post off the RF100A with cheque or credit card details.
