Have you ever tried to trade-in a Renault? I wish you luck

I bought a new Renault Scenic1.4 back in 2005. I have decided after 2 years it's time to change the car. The main problem being nobody wants it. I have tried many dealers, who have told me they don't want to take in a Renault, including 1 Renault dealer. After visiting 8 dealers I have only been given quotes from 2. E14,000 is the max trade in I'm being given. So for anyone considering buying a Renault, DON'T do it unless you want to use it as a garden ornament in a few years time.

the lesson here is don't buy a Renault new as they depreciate quicker than some of their counterparts
the converse of your tale is that they make excellent purchases when they are 2/3 years old, as long as you have the plan to keep them for a long period
I'm on my 4th Renault and I have always bought in this fashion, last year got a top of the range 1.4 Scenic with all the extras, 17k on the clock, less than 2 years old for €15.5

Sounds like €14,000 is actually a decent amount for a trade-in. The dealer will have to make his margin on it too. How much do you realistically think you'd make if you sold it privatly?

€14,000 is not bad going, The garage by the time it's got it a valet, Full service, Warranty, The garage will prob spend a €1,000 euro on it and could prob only retail it for around €16,000 or so and less and less the longer it stays on the fore court. The 1.6 is the more powerful engine and second hand will sell better coz the 1.4 isn't really powerful enough to pull that car. When buying a new car you have to bear in mind it's resale ability. That's what a salesman looks at when it's being traded in and when someone is buying it second hand. The extra's sell it later, so does the size of engine, When you buy a little car with a big engine it's harder to sell aswell. You just have to be thinking when buying.

They make very good value 2nd hand. Just be lucky you did buy a early key card Laguna, I hear you can give them a way. Least year I bought a (old model) 03 Scenic, 1.4, Twin Sun Roof, Climate control, Alloys, 4EW, 34k for 10.9K. That’s over 60% depreciation in 3 years. I got it from a dealer you had gotten 4 or 5 from a main dealer, as he could not shift them. Mind you he was looking for 15-16k for the same car.

Towger.

I went to trade in a 98 civic and 2002 accord against a 2004 accord at the weekend - the dealer was offering me €9k for the two. A 2002 accord of the spec I was trading in (1.8, SE, low mileage, full Honda service history) changes hands for 10k - 11k on the forecourt, nice profit for the garage if I was stupid enought to take him up on his deal.

My lesson - all cars are a waste of money from a depreciation point of view.

Quinno, What Forecourt? The Garage (Main Dealer) could not put these on his forecourt, There two old to sell with a warranty. He sold one car and traded in Two. '98 Civic 3 grand ish '02 Accord 6 grand ish, I would't kick myself with that, Took the hassle of selling them private and being with out a car.

Thanks MR2 - the 02 accord retails at dealers country-wide between €10790 - €14950 according to carzone.ie website. So it doesn't take a genius to work out that they are taking this from you at €6k and selling it on at a profit between 5k - 7k!!OK, it won't have an original warranty, but surely a garage warranty of 6 months to 1 year would come with this car on the forecourt? I was expecting to get reamed on the civic, but was shocked with the accord.

This dealer is doing you a favour taking in 2 cars. He will have to make another 2 transactions after yours in order to turn a profit

I know what your saying, But Accords are not great sellers, There not class leaders and your '02 could be sitting on a fore court somewhere for a long time yet, A car is only worth what some one is willing to pay for it, The trader that buys your car from the dealer might sell that for €8,000 if he thinks he can get rid of it. Take a note of the cars on carzone (which are over priced) and look back in two weeks to see what ones are still there and what money there at. And I'm afraid in two or three years time your in for the same again with the '04 accord.

All cars depreciate. Lagunas are terrible in this regard. The Scenic is one of the better Renaults and is in demand 2nd hand.

Same thing with Saabs. Lovely cars, but if it's more than 3 years old or has more than 50K miles, you may as well hold on to it.

Forget the jokers on carzone, Revenue calculate the OMSP of your accord at 9k. Factor in 2.5/3k for the civic, then add cost to prep them for the forecourt and 9k (though not great) is about all you can expect to get.

carzone ,,nearly every car on this is retail ,alot of people use this as areference to what there car is worth but to get a slighty clearer veiw you should be looking in the buy and sell .carzone is about 4k more than any car is worth
if people only knew the true realitly and amount of money most main dealers make from cars the defo would not go into the game.people have this mad veiw dealers are making a fortune from trade ins but as mr2 pointed out by the time its valeted ,new tyres,t-belts serviced and painted/sratches it suddenly becomes an expensive car.yes we do make a few good hits but so do solicitors /it /estate agents and they dont get the same branding as robbing ba..tar.ds

the old saying (around here anyway)
buy a renault = marry a renault.

I take the point that a car is only worth what you can get for it. But speaks volumes about customer care and support that a dealer won't risk a warranty on a 4/5 yr old car of its own brand.
