Pointless bank transaction details

Does anyone else get bugged by the stupid descriptions input for standing orders and other transactions by Bank of Ireland and possibly others ?

I now have a number of transactions showing up on my current account every month along the lines of :
04JAN Zag McZigmund SO 250.00
06JAN Zag McZigmund SO 100.00
Given that the account is mine, including my name in the description is pretty pointless. It would be a little more meaningful to have the descriptions like
04JAN IRISH PERMANENT SO 250.00
06JAN ANGLO SO 100.00

Even better by far would be the ability to change the descriptions online yourself. I recently rang them to change one of the descriptions and they (claimed they) had to delete the entire repeating transaction and set it up again. In true 365 fashion I got one letter in the post telling me the transaction had been deleted and the next day got one saying the transaction had been set up.

It's been one of those days . . .

Is it not the payee/recipient of SO/DDs that controls the reference information in these transactions and perhaps they use the payer's name/details in order to track them at their end? On the other hand the few DDs that I use have relatvely meaningful info when I view them online (e.g. at least the name of the payee) so I'm not sure why I don't see something similar to you...

The reference field is a separate field in the message than the one BoI are probably showing. AIB online banking shows sensible information for the standing order entries I have (and even allows me to modify the details on some of them!).

Well then, I'll have to big up PTSB - my standing orders and DD on my online a/c clearly highlight details.

e.g payments to NTL / Rabodirect clearly detailed!

Not with Ulster Bank. I had words with the manager who said "I am sick and tired of telling the staff at the counter when taking in lodgments or making payments to use the right codes". It is downright laziness and nothing else. Some staff are prepared to remember the right codes and press the right buttons and the rest couldn't be bothered.

Have to agree. Its also very handy that when transferring funds between accounts the account holder has the option the add their own reference.

It can be done in-branch. The Online agents don't have the same facilities, cos they're not a branch.

BoI have promised an overhaul of their online offering for later this year.

FWIW, SOs & DDs are apples and oranges.
