Going to NY in May (2 adults) and am a bit stunned at hotel prices! For the two of us to go for 8 nights, we are looking at 2,500! Just wondering if any one can personally recommend a central hotel at a resonable rate. Our budget for accommodation has risen from 1,000 to 1,500!

Have checked trip advisor etc but some reviews vary so much!

Thank you in advance!

We stayed at a La Quinta Inn in Manhattan, near the Empire State. Was as central and as reasonable as we could find last September.

Try the Vincci Avalon Hotel which is in Midtown close to the Empire State. Great reviews on tripadvisor.com and good deals on opodo.com

Have you tried posting your query on the trip advisor forum. Those guys really know their stuff. I'm going in 2 weeks and I'm reading it quite a bit at the moment. If you post your query, give them the dates you are interested in and a general idea of where in Manhattan you want to stay they will do their best to help you. There are plenty of local experts who will steer you in the right direction.

To summarise a lot of what I am reading, they advise booking something cancellable up front and keep trying to get a better deal. There are websites which specialise in late bookings - travelzoo.com and priceline (you make a bid on an unknown hotel i.e 4* Times Square area and you only find out what you got after you pay). If you get something better you can cancel the origanal booking.

I booked the Salisbury Hotel on hotels.com. Its costing me €950 for 5 nights for a one bed suite (one room with 2 double beds and a living room with a pull out sofa bed. It also has a mini kitchen).

Try the radiocitapts.com site. It is supposed to be a good place to stay but it is very hard to get as it is very popular. It rates highly on trip advisor and it seems to be quite reasonable for New York. It was booked out when I wanted to go.

heading to new york also in May....am shocked at the hotel prices. Even your average 3 star is 1k+ for 7 nights, and with many of them you have to share a bathroom!!!!

THank you all for the replies, did look up the radio city apts but they are booked out for time we are there!
As for the pennslyvania - I was told to stay well away from it!

Will post on the New York Forum on Trip Advisor and see how I go there too!!

Thanks again, will let ye know when I get something booked!

We've booked the Affinia Dumont for 7 nights in mid Feb - approx. 14000 dollars for a studio suite (oversized bedroom with kitchen) - great reviews on Tripadvisor 4.2 rating & Expedia 4.8 rating). Hopefully it'll be as good in reality as in the reviews. Near the Empire State in Murray Hill. Got the cheapest rate by booking directly with the hotel after trawling through the numerous online cheap sites

We stayed in the Belleclaire on the Upper West Side last April. Location second to none, great delis and restaurants nearby for breakfast and lunch. Stone's throw from Central Park but has a real New York neighbourhood feel to it. Budget hotel with small rooms but all amenities. Very clean. We shared a bathroom with 2 other rooms as it was much cheaper to do this. Bathroom was really clean and never had to queue. Was rated 4 on Tripadvisor when we booked but has gone to 3.5 for whatever reason. Would not hesitate to recommend it if it's available. At the time we paid €435 total for 4 nights for two of us including all taxes and charges. I think we booked through hotels.com but check out as many sites as you can as availability and price vary from site to site as you are probably aware.

Avoid the Pennsylvania at all costs. Check out the Milford Plaza, stayed there last year, excellent location and very reasonable
