going to Canaries for a week(have accommodation booked) but have decided to extend holiday by 4 days, I have checked out the web sites listed here there seems to be plenty of accommodation available- am I better to book in advance before I go or should I just do it over there? first part of holiday is package through travel agent.

You would be fine this time of year to leave till ure there. Do th research here before you go to get places available. Its normally the case that you could stay on where you start your holidays on a daily rate basis, as they too will have free space.

thank you,
the place where I am staying for the week have places available for second week but my travel agent quoted me €300 for 4 days(self catering) so have decided to wait till I get there and will have all research done.

You could simply check out of your hotel and book in to another hotel for the 4 day stay. Can you not book the flights and hotel separately yourself rather than go through a travel agent?. There is no reason why you can not have a two hotel holiday stay perhaps on different parts of the island.

You're first week is a package holiday?. How will that work out for the return flight? Can you change your return flight details from 7 days to 11 days with the travel agency?.

the holiday was spur of the moment went into travel agent as was not confident enough to book accommodation in a place I had not been to before.
Then decided to extend by 1 week but was told there were no available flights, on this site I discovered Ryan air fly from Fuerteventura and had cheap flights so decided to stay extra few days but will lose out price of our return part of flight.
On checking accommodation/flights posted on this site by booking myself I could have saved €350, a very expensive lesson.
I am getting braver have booked a night in hotel in in Marchif that goes ok no more travel agent.

I travel abroad approximately every 6 weeks and would never consider booking with a travel agent any destination anywhere near where Aer Lingus/Ryanair or similar airlines have regular scheduled flights to. Most hotel websites can give you great pictures, overview, maps for location and other travellers opinions on specific hotels. You can use Tripadvisors forum for getting info from locals on public transport, best locations to stay etc. Remember travel agents charge per person on room usage whereas if you book with the hotel you are charged on a per room basis.
