Is it difficult to change RAM?

I've noticed a 2nd hand pc tower for sale at a very good price, but it only has 64MB RAM.

I have an old base unit which I know has 128 MB RAM.

Is it difficult to take out the 128 MB RAM from the old base unit and transfer it to the tower?

I'm not too knowledgeable about computers, but if it's fairly straightforward such as opening up the tower and unplugging a card and simply slotting into that place the 128 RAM then I'm sure I could do that.

Is it more complicated than this...?

Will the 128 RAM fit the location of the old 64 RAM?

It's not difficult to install RAM but you need to take certain precautions to avoid ESD and you also need to make sure that the RAM parts and motherboards are compatible. Don't assume that RAM from one machine will necessarily work with another. Post specific details of the makes/models/motherboards if at all possible.

Thanks

I'm not sure about the motherboards.

The tower for sale is a Lifetec Pentium II 400 MHZ, with 64MB RAM, and the old base unit I have is a Dell Pentium II 450 MHZ with 128MB RAM

The reason I wanted to use the Lifetec (which I haven't heard of) instead of the Dell was because the Dell has no hard disk, and for some reason any hard disk I've ever tried never fits it.

You'd really need to post more specific details (e.g. what specific Lifetec and Dell model numbers or better still motherboard make and model) to be sure. Older PCs in particular can have restrictions on what sort of memory configurations they can take.

You also need to specify the type of RAM you have.

Have you tried getting an external hard disk for the Dell?

If the Pc's are a similar age then there is a good chance that they will use the same RAM. Good chance but not a definate one ! :)

A 'very good price' for this machine is if they gave money with it. It is basically worthless. Keep an eye out on adverts.ie and JumbleTown.ie and you will see better machines than this being given away.

Try putting a Wanted ad in Adverts.

You should really be looking for something with at least a Pentium 4 processor. We give away Pentium III's with 256MB RAM here in work to schools.

What you need for the Dell are Dell HD rails. I won't bother just jury rig something. Ram is expensive at the moment, and personally I wouldn't bother with machines that old when you get a much newer one for 300 or so, probably with a XP licence and a monitor. I bought new laptop from the Dell outlet for 350.
