Reaching Broadband Download limits

Reading another post prompted this question. I have ntl broadband (the basic package) and I use iTunes to stream radio stations etc. Am I risking reaching my monthly broadband download limits (which I am not familiar with) if say I stream music 2 hours/4 hours etc a day every day for a month?

Good quality audio would be 128kbps. 4hrs a day for 30 days gives 6.6 GB of download.

Doesn't your ISP provide some way of checking your download/upload cap usage? I know that UTV do (seems to only update once daily) and you have the option of being charged for excess usage or locking your account until the next month if you hit the cap.

You can get tools to monitor your upload/download usage, but it's far more accurate to use the monitors provided by your ISP.

It's also amazing how you can rack up a few GBs or so with just normal usage (a few large e-mail attachments, use of FTP sites, general browsing, etc.) so worth keeping an eye on this.

My cap with UTV used to be only a few GB (3 I think - it's 2MB up and 12MB down nowadays) at one stage and I never ever came close to hitting it in spite of consistent use and large numbers of software downloads.

Hi all,

I have 1 MB BT-Broadband and total talk package for €45/month; I would like to know how you can find whether I have reached my downloading limits on BT broadband. Does anyone know what is max download limit on this package?

Many thanks

According to their FAQ there's a 10GB data transfer limit.
You will be entitled to use these limits in either direction without penalty. If you go over these limits we reserve the right to charge you for any additional data (at 1 cents including VAT per MB).
The broadband forums on boards.ie should give you an idea how much they actually enforce these limits. I believe most suppliers implement a "fair usage" policy, rather than strictly adhering to the limits.
