Cost of Plasterer

Just got a quote for plastering of our house (3200 sq ft), internal and external for 20k, excluding materials. Is this reasonable and how much can we expect the materials to cost? presumably, it's only cement and sand that's required?

Probably about right. As for what other costs are involved, you'l be vey suprised. Theres the sand and cement of course, but also the beading, angle beads, skim coat, bonding, timber for the reveals, expanded mesh if needed etc. It all adds up.

The plastering was the most expensive part of our house. (labour and materials)

Plastering of our house cost 12k plus materials 18 months ago (included external plaster on garage). It is about 2300 sq ft. I thought that was expensive! I could have got it cheaper than that - but this plasterer was recommended. I can't understand how they can justify it for the time spent. I know there's some skill involved - but I think they are just charging crazy prices.

It takes years to become a good plasterer as well as natural ability. There is more than just "some skill" involved. Try it yourself and see how you get on.

I can plaster and it didn't take me years to learn, do trainees spend years doing botch jobs before they can finally plaster?

I agree with Purple that there is a lot of skill to plastering. We have done work to our house at three different times with three different plasterers and the quality of the plastering varies drastically.

Hi All
Just had the plastering done on the exterior of a 2500 ft house plus a large garage, the total i paid for labour was 2900 euro plus extra for materials.think i got a good deal there? The Plasterer is a neighbour of mine so he just charged a daily rate and the finish was great. He is starting inside this week.

@barry

Where are you? I need a good plasterer. I'm in Clare.

We paid €4,500 for exterior of 2,350 sq ft ( 3 gabled ) dormer and a 260 sq ft garage and entrance walls. That included materials. We are almost ready for interior which is a mix of sand and cement (internal walls ) and skim on dry lined (external walls). The cost of the interior is €7,500 including materials. So all in €12k including materials. the guy is slow, but very neat and tidy for a plasterer.

just quoted 13.5 k for a 2700 square foot house in Kerry, labour only. This was the cheapest of 3 quotes. o 20 k seems reasonable enough.

Hi Secman,

where are you located, does anyone know if it's better to get the internal walls etc plastered or slabbed and plastered?

Do you put insulation inside the plaster board, then plaster over it?

We are trying to get quotes at the moment, building a 2800sq ft house in Carrigaline area, Cork.

Want to know what the best option is for insulation values, costs involved and if anyone can recommend other plasters we can include in the quotation process please let us know.

Thanks

Hi silvergirl,

We are located in Wexford. We insulated the inside of all external walls with a product called Low E. This was battened, slabbed with plasterboard and then skimmed. All internal walls done in sand/cement and finishing plaster. The low E is aboat €275 a roll, had to buy 5 rolls as this was used also in the dormer part over rockwool. Also factor in cost of sealing tape €40 a roll,we used 4 and also battens . We did all this ourselves which saved a lot on labour, as it was very time consuming.
