Looking for a car (having sold mine) and have decided to try to buy a cheap(little project)car this time as i never used the last one.

Looking for reliability, fuel efficiency and not too boring.

Was looking at audis a4s but quite rare second-hand (private) and the price advertised strains my budget.
Almeras - not really interested in them and they dont have great roadholding.
Corollas - Not really interested.
Carisma - Boring but cheap but not too many around.........

Any ideas ?

You want a reliable car for less than 3k. That means you have to get a Japanese car as anything else at that age will likely have problems. But you rule out almost all the likely candidates as being boring!!

If the Mazda 323F mentioned above does not suit then, you are going to have to compromise. Make out a list of what you want in a car and rank it in the order of preference.
Then you can start the selection process.

Couldn't agree more. But they are boring which is alright but i have had everything from saab, bmw, merc, ford, mitsubishi, toyota, nissan so for me its just a little challenge to see what really is the best in regards of price, reliability and even driving characteristics and all for a max of 3K. A 95 almera and a 95 A4 are great cars with the almera just been ahead on reliability(gearbox?) and is cheaper ,but the A4 can handle a corner better.

If I spent only 3k on a car I wouldn't be too keen to throw it into corners! If you want lots of car for the money, and particularly if you only intend to use it a little, consider a good classic car. Choose a top-spec model, then get lots of comfort (relative to its age) very cheap to insure and tax regardless of engine size, etc, maybe an old Merc again?

rover 618i, (make sure it has the honda engine)
i've had a 96 one since 2000. not one bit of hassle with it. keeps passing it's nct.

Yep looks like a good car.Ask is there any service history.Make sure to bring it for drive on back roads because the ride can be quite harsh.
