We have decided to go to Germany on a family holiday this year ... (2 adults + 2 small children) ... we will probably stay in Bavaria and are looking for suggestions for accommodation, things to do/see - places to avoid etc. Any experiences would be great. Many thanks

Freiburg - very nice city. Mountains and black forest nearby.

Strange water channels in streets, kids will like that, plus two cable cars for them to go up.

Munich - big city, plenty to see and do.

Alps - lots of walks, cable cars, cog railways into the mountains.

Regensburg - another nice old city, on the Danube.

The railway operator is DB, see www.db.de

absolute must to go see the fairy tale castle of Neuschwanstein as featured in chitty chitty bang bang!!!, about an hour from munich as far as i remember, fantastic countryside, lakes, etc.

Has anyone got an recommendations for accommodation in the Black Forest - we're going in September this year

You should check out the Matt Cooper show on Today FM from today (3 July 2007)-the travel section (from 6.30 onwards) dealt with Germany. It will be available online, you will need to go about 2 hours in to get to the relevant section.

If you have time you should bring the family to see Heidelberg Castle.

When I was there first my eyes popped out of my head. It was like suddenly finding myself in the middle of a three dimensional playstation game. I kid you not. The dimensions scale and design of the castle amazed me.
And up the steps inside the castle perched high on top of the hill there is a green area like stephens green where you can have a picnic and play with a ball or frisbee, with a restaurant and cafe and lots of things to explore. Its a great place to bring a family if you happen to be there at a time of year when the weather is good. There is a fantastic view down on the Rhine from the castle which is featured on many postcards..
Funny thing is though the second and third times I went there I was less and less impressed. I guess you can become used to anything. However if you havent been there before I highly recommend a day trip especially if the weather is good as exploring the castle grounds is mostly an outdoors activity.
You can also stay the night in Heidelberg and see a house which was a famous composers birthplace or possibly where he lived. I saw the house but I cant remember the composers name :(

If you visit the Black Forest you'd do well to stay a night in Villingen, a very pretty walled town with lots to see and do around it.
