Just wondering has anyone managed to bag a bargin on DVD Recorder? An 80Gb HDD would suffice. I was interested in the LG RH177. It was €285 in Currys before xmas. It is now 'on sale' for €290!! I have read good reviews on this model so anyone know where it could be got a bit cheaper. I hoped to spend about 250 max. I am going to Derry in a few days, would there be any cheaper?
Also any feedback on the Philips DVDR3440? It was in Homebase before Xmas. Not too sure if it is on sale now though.
Thanks.

I got the bargain of the century yesterday based on the link you posted. I was in Homebase yesterday and my sister noticed they were selling ex display model DVD players and recorders. They were mostly Philips. We thought the cheaper one looked like the better one but we couldn't understand why it was cheaper.

We called a manager over to explain the difference between 2 models and what was missing. The manager recommended the one we bought (80gb HDD 3440H), said that only the instructions were missing (leads were too). When I told him I thought it strange the HDD one was cheaper than the normal DVD recorder, he nearly wet himself. There were 2 of them, we placed one in our trolley and walked off. It was €80. When we passed the display stand a couple of minutes later he had 2 other sales staff with him deep in conversation. Needless to say the 2nd one was removed from the display.

I needed to get a scart lead and aerial lead (nicked from the old video in the house) and I downloaded the manual but its working perfectly. Not bad for €80!

Well done, €80 is for nothing surely.
Is there any compatability issues with buying a DVD Recorder in N. Ire. with regards them having a Tuner and the whole VHF and UHF thing? How would I check the LG RH177 would work down here?

How would I check the LG RH177 would work down here

I bought a Targa HDD 160GB Recorder in Lidl last year which, apparently, is the same unit. (Same multi-region crack anyways).

Works perfectly down here, cost was €299 in Dec '05 as far as I remember.

oldjim, I had no problem with the tuner. When you are setting it up you can select the language/region etc. I just selected Ireland as my region and it automatically found all the stations shown on Irish TV.

Just to close out on this.
The LG RH177 DVD Recorder with 80Gb HDD was €290 in Currys in Ireland. I bought it for £150 (~= €225) in Currys in Derry. That's a big difference.
It is a nice machine. For pause live TV and ease of recording, they are the business. Happy out!

Empire Direct have the LG RH177 on sale for £149.99 plus £5 delivery
