Evolution v Religion

My sister in law bought me The God Delusion for Xmas (ironically) and I found it a very interesting read over the holiday. Of course he was preaching to the non converted in my case. :D

It was no surprise to read Professor Terry Eagleton’s acidulous observation: “Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology.”

The difference is that knowledge of birds is gleaned from observation and collection of hard data but such exercises are impossible when it comes to mystical beings/forces assumed a priori (by some) to exist. The comment above presupposes that there is something to be learned about the existence of deities by studying theology and sacred texts. Not everybody would agree that this is so.

Rubbish! I am an expert on Hobbits having read The Hobbit AND The Lord of the Rings.

You may ask what link there is between knowing all that is written about them in books and constructing a logical argument to support their existence in the read world. You may well ask but the answer is simple; faith!
It's a brilliant argument because it precludes the need for logic or evidence or rationality or reason. It was constructed before the age of reason or the enlightenment and has succeeded in ignoring both of them ever since so cover your ears and close your eyes and be happy as the lord will provide (just like he does in Darfur).
