The difference is that knowledge of birds is gleaned from observation and collection of hard data but such exercises are impossible when it comes to mystical beings/forces assumed a priori (by some) to exist. The comment above presupposes that there is something to be learned about the existence of deities by studying theology and sacred texts. Not everybody would agree that this is so.It was no surprise to read Professor Terry Eagleton’s acidulous observation: “Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology.”
