San Francisco & San Diego

Hi Folks

We are starting to look into a honeymoon destination for September and are considering San Francisco and San Diego. We are hampered by the fact that we don't drive so some of the smaller coastal Californian towns might be trickier to visit. We are thinking about spending about a week in each city. We'd be into the cultural stuff, music, sightseeing, and the zoo in San Diego (!) but might like a few days on the beach at the start as well. Anyone have an opinion on this idea. I know San Fran is meant to be well served by public transport, anyone know the story in San Diego?
thanks

public transport is not the mae west in san diego unless you're just hanging about downtown in which case theres the "trolley". you just HAVE to do seaworld. its the coolest place ever. only about 15mins on the bus from downtown. i'm not sure if the "trolley" goes there. probably does. much cooler than the zoo (in my opinion). but they're both class. man, you're gonna love it!

Mmm,...trying to see the West coast without a car, well you're not making life easy for yourself!!
At least if you stay in downtown SD, you can get the ferry over to Coronado and a bus to the Hotel there. In Pacific Beach you can hire bikes to go along the boardwalk maybe up to La Jolla if you're fit. SD is a fanastic city, and well worth the effort and if you have to use taxis a bit more than SF, don't let that put you off.

Did this a good few years ago without a car : Saw San Francisco, LA, Santa Barbara and San Diego.

I think we flew SF to SD, then went to Rosarita, a beach resort South of Tijuana in Mexico for a few nights. Got the trolley from SD to border, then bus from Tijuana to Rosarita. Didn't like Tijuana, it was well dodgy, but Rosarita was a nice alternative to USA. Got bus from SD to LA, the hotels, evens hostels can do pickups from bus or train station or airport. I think we bussed up from LA to Santa Barbara, and then flew from Santa Barbara back to SF.

From memory the flight tickets were reasonable, 50-60 dollars each way or so.

Biggest problem was in LA, I remember trying to get across the city on buses / trains, it was useless. Ended up spending 70+ dollars on a cab after waiting hours for trains / buses which never showed.

Why not fly in, and immediately take a connecting flight to Mexico, and stay a few days on a beach in Southern Mexico. I've never done it, but I heard that further South in Mexico (i.e. not right beside the US border) is very nice, and very reasonable. Then you could travel back up the West coast at your leisure.

PS San Francisco is COLD. As in wear a jumper cold, and overcast. When I went there, I assumed California = sunshine, but this is not always true further north. San Diego is much better if this is what you are after.

PS San Francisco is COLD.
Not always. Was there a few times in winter and got weather better than the best summers days here in Ireland! However if the fog rolls in it can get chilly alright and it's best to bring a few layers just in case.

Hi Folks

Thanks for all the tips. Reckon we might investigate this a bit more but sounds fairly doable if we base ourselves in the two cities and maybe get a connecting flight between them.

Was there in the summer, but we drove. I believe the "Coast Starlight" train will take you up to San Francisco, and has fantastic scenery along the way!

when in SF see if you can get a trip up to yosemite national park it's really fab.

you can also hire bikes down on fisher mans wharf and cycle over the golden gate bridge and if you go down the other side you come into a town called sausalito which is very nice, we didn't cycle back but got a ferry over which took us past alcatraz and dropped us back at the wharf.
