Busybee (DVD rental): concerned why they would need to know my personal details?

Just wanted to subscribe to busybee(DVD rental) but am a bit concerned why they would need to know whether I am male or female and my date of birth
It is supposed to be a reputable company, otherwise, why would cdwow do business with them, but unfortunately in this day and age one cannot be too careful with personal information.
Would you give this kind of information out to a company even though it should serve no purpose to them ?
Also I have seen some info in some threads last year, and they seem to be OK, but are there are any more recent opinions out there ?

Re: Busybee questions

I'm guessing they're just looking for some personal details so they can build up a profile of who does business with them for research purposes.

Re: Busybee questions

Have you checked their privacy policy?
If you don't like the questions they ask on registration then don't do business with them.

Re: Busybee questions

Interesting that you raise this point - I raised it in another context - see

Hope I did the link post ok!

Re: Busybee questions

Luckily I am not the only thinking about this.
Anyway Clubman, Privacy policy states :
Busy Bee DVD Ireland protects your privacy and does not provide any of your information to 3rd Parties.

Anyway I fully agree with the statement " If you don't like it , don't do business with them", and normally I would run a mile, but it appears this company is providing a fairly good service for a decent price. Also they have titles their competitors don't have and I like. Anyway I will email them and ask them why they need to know my DOB and whether I am female. Let's see what they answer.

Re: Busybee questions

Male or female seems irrelevant to me but date of birth could have signifance for ratings purposes though self certifying this is probably meaningless too.

Re: Busybee questions

Well.... the email address was the only way of contacting them and guess what I got in my inbox this morning:

This is the email server for the busybeedvd.com domain.

I'm sorry to have to inform you that the message returned
below could not be delivered to one or more destinations.

<info@busybeedvd.com>: Permanent Failure: No account by that name here

I'll get on to CDWOW now to see if they can help.

Whats the worst thing that can happen if you furnish them with information that is slightly distorted?

I would have thought that for marketing purposes your age and gender would be very relevant to Busybee, e.g. how many females aged 45+ would be intrested in the Die Hard Trilogy etc? Likewise, how many males aged 18-30 would have any interest in The Devil Wears Prada?

Are you suggesting that the Irish Film Censor issues gender specific ratings!?!
