I currently have a Mazda 3 1.4 Touring petrol which I love to bits - the spec is great.. but my mileage is shockingly high (25k miles min per annum) so it's time to say bye bye & get a diesel - but which one?

I don't want a 2 litre engine - 1.6 should do me just fine and I'd like the same type of spec that I currently have (a/c, fingertip controls, all electric windows etc.)

Mazda 3 diesel, Kia, Toyota, Nissan??

Opel are doing a 1.6 Astra Diesel. I have been driving the petrol models for a few years and they are very reliable. DG opel on the Navan road were giving me the best deal when shopping around last year. Hope this helps.

I was talking to a Toyota Dealer yesterday who told me that the new Corolla will be available shortly and is coming in a 1.4 diesel.

It has been officially confirmed that Toyota will continue to use the Corolla name for its saloon model. In fact, pictures of the new Corolla for 2007 are available for viewing on the Toyota Ireland homepage, www.toyota.ie. The Corolla should be in dealerships nationwide around late February/ March time.

Do you mind me asking you if your annual mileage is so high that you warrant a diesel. I know you say that your mpg is terrible in your Mazda but if you only drive 10K miles per year a diesel will not be cost effective.

I bought my Mazda 3 in mid-Oct 2004. It now has 84500 km on the clock... in just over 2 years, so I would definitely benefit from changing to a diesel!!!. Also might be able to use diesel tank in work to cut costs, so could afford to take the 2.0l engine hit

p.s. Husband has an Astra & I don't particularly like it all that much - I did test drive one when I was shopping around for the last car & just preferred the Mazda

The Astra & the Mazda 3 are probably on a par with each other for comfort. Have a look at the Focus diesel (1.6). Its a pity the new focus is not as nice as the out-going one, but its still the best hatch out there and the 1.6TDCi engine is fantastic

How about Ford S-Max Diesel? I've got one with 1.8 TDCi, after travelling 700km, I've still got 16ltrs. left out of 65 ltrs. (including county side driving to Cork). It's quite big MPV but its worth the space. And when in city drive, it consumes as the same with a 1.2 petrol (that's in my own observation).

Since Ford and Mazda are in some way connected, Is the highly rated 1.6 TDCi engine that is in the Focus, the same engine that is in the 1.6 Diesel Mazda?
Any opinions on the diesel Mazda?
