Broadband & 2 phone sockets; Help Please

Hello,

I have just installed broadband and have the following problem;

I have 2 phone sockets, original one in hall, the other in computer room which I fitted myself by splitting the line up in the attic. I connected the broadband modem/router as per instructions, fitting ASDL microfilters to each socket. When I powered up the modem there was on DSL signal light on the modem. After some trial and error I have discovered the following;

If I unplug the phone line in the hall and remove the filter in the computer room the connection works fine. If I now fit the filter in the computer room the DSL light immediately goes out. When I remove the filter and reestablish connection if I then plug the phone line back in the hall ( with no filters) the DSL light again goes out.
In summary, the only way I can get a connection is when I have just one socket connected with no ASDL microfilter fitted.

Would appreciate any advice please

Thanks.

The root of your problem is putting a filter in front of the ASDL modem. The filter only allows voice signalling through and blocks all data signalling. The purpose of the filter is to allow ordinary phones to operate on a line that is also using DSL. Now are you using a phone in the room with the computer? - if not I would simply disconnect the filter and connect the modem directly to the phone line. On your other line you should leave a filter attached.

Thanks for your reply Lissard

I'm not sure what you mean by "putting a filter in front of the ASDL modem". The instructions said to fit a filter to every phone socket and then plug the telephone cables into the filters, which I did.

The reason I split the phone cable was to connect a dial-up modem from the computer and which works fine. I have no phone connected in the computer room. The problem is that even without any filters I cannot connect to broadband in the computer room unless I unplug the phone from the hall socket.(the DSL light on the router goes out as soon as the phone cable in the hall is plugged in. Dial-up from the computer room worked ok with the phone plugged in the hall socket

Thanks.

the filter is to avoid boardband signal affecting normal phone line. in my house i got a AZXL modem from BT and i didn't put in the filter and it works ok. the same thing happened to my modem when i put it in.the filter somehow affect the boardband performance.

Hello,

The problem is that without any ASDL filters it still does not work. I have the broadband modem connected directly to one socket and the phone directly connected to the other. I have to unplug the phone wire in order to get the DSL light on the modem to come on and for broadband to connect!

Thanks

try to put a splitter at the first socket to minimise the effects.thats how i connect my bpoardband for the pc upstairs

Westie123,

From what you've described it may be that the quality of the cabling to your computer room is not quite up to scratch. We moved house recently and in it we have two phone points, one installed by Ericom and the other a DIY job put in by the last owner. Whatever combination of filters I tried I could not get the modem to work off the extension line. To get around this I put my modem down in the hall and use wireless. I'm pretty sure the root cause of my problem was the quality of the cabling and termination of the phone extension. I think the eircom box on the wall does a little more than simply connect the wires to an rJ-11 phone socket.

Had similer problem, "The computer has to be connected directly to the main line comming into the house", not branch offs, you will have to make your computer room phone direct first. With me it had to be changed at main juntion, wires had to be changed around.

Hello,

Thanks for all the help. I finally discovered what was wrong! Because I was only using 1 device at each socket I used the two single ASDL filters to connect. Big Oops!! You have to use the double microfilter and plug the modem into the DSL connection even if the phone connection is not being used. As the saying goes "RTFM"

Thanks again and Happy Christmas to all.

I have a slightly different problem. It really is a shot in the dark. I had Eircom broadband up until last week and it has gone. My DSL sync light flashes a couple of times, then nought. I have connected it to the main drop point outside the house (with correct filters etc) to no avail. I live in the malahide area? I've contacted Eircom and they will send someone out "soon".

Any ideas?
