Hi,
My friend sold a record (Lp) to someone in Europe and sent it by registered post to them as they had paid him in advance, anyway they buyer contacted my friend today to see the record was cracked at the side, (even though she did pack it well).
Who is responsible there?
Is it the post office, or does my friend pay the money back to the person?
What do you think?

happened to me as a buyer, asked for a full refund as I deemed the seller responsible seeing as the packing was a bit too thin (he was shipping from the US). This was on ebay using Paypal so it wasn't too difficult.

I guess ther seller could have raised the issue that it was the post service responsibility but he accepted that he could have packed it better (as in double sturdy corrugated cardboard layers).

in fairness it's up to your mate. if using ebay you're bound to get negative freedback too if you handle these complaints poorly. I'd reccommend honest and flexible communication with the buyer to agree on a partial or full refund.

It might be a scam, but I'd have my doubts. It's far more likely to be An Post.
We've had lots of items busted, lost, late and damaged. They've even managed to destroy a ream of payslips!

Sometimes it's like they go out of their way to smash stuff up. I've even heard postlore about not writing 'fragile' on parcels, because they'll really have fun kicking that about.

if its on ebay, private sellers normally offer refunds less P&P (in my experience). Id get the buyer to send it back or at least post some very clear pics of the broken LP.

It's impossible to say how the record was broken or who broke it. If they have nothing to hide, they should have no trouble providing evidence.

Is it appropriate to send an LP by post, no matter how well it is packed? I don't think it would require much kicking around to damage it. They are fragile.

i bought and sold a lot of records online, I only had the one item damaged so far, it's relatively safe provided you do pack it properly...in general the further it has to travel, the sturdier the package...

get the buyer to send a photo of the broken record rather than wasting P & P again, ask to include something with date (eg. newspaper etc.) in shot

An Post will not compensate for a broken record. Regristration does not cover breakage like this - the only advantage re registration is it can be traced if lost in post.

if it was packed ok it shouldn't have broken unless it was handled very badly. and thats where another problem arises. the item was going abroad. so who broke it?. an post or the other postal administation? I would imagine that both will deny they were responsible or that more likely they can't establish who was at fault.
