anyone any suggestions on a security system for my new home?? Something reasonably priced.....it's not Fort Knox....

thanks

We've been happy enough with Eircom's Phonewatch, although there is an ongoing monitoring fee as well as the initial fee for installment & equipment. Although you can run the system without the monthly monitoring- and the nice big Phonewatch sign outside your house acts as a lovely deterrent.

Hi thanks for that.

I don't want to install a phone line into my duplex. Does anyone know of any alarms systems that send a text or do you need a phone line for this also?

Thanks

Most good modern system will support a GSM dialler, which can phone you prerecorded message and text message. Some support the likes of X10, so you can remotely turn on and off lights etc.

Are you looking for a DIY alarm or to get some one in to install it?
Google Powermax Plus and [broken link removed] for DIY wireless alarms.

It depends on how difficult they are to install and at what price someone would install one for me.

I'm looking for a basic alarm system that i can turn on when i'm in the house.....and when i'm not there it can text me if someone has broken in and what sensors are going off.....

my house is prewired...... what price would i be talking about here? any ideas?

As you don't have a land line you will need a gsm unit if you want to receive texts from your alarm and these are expensive.
Without the text you could get an alarm for €500+ depending on how many windows and doors you have.
The alarms panels that the OP mentioned are wireless so wouldn't really suit your situation.
Brands to look for when shopping around are Europlex aritech and HKC.

How much are we talking and is there much of a difference in whats available or is one as good as another/have the same functionality??

Presumably, to get the value out of it, it could be used for both alarm and house automation features eg. lighting, heating, etc?? - or is a seperate gsm unit required for each?

An Astec 63DV would cost between €500 & €600 installed . Astec also do a nice little GSM unit for around €250 .

i would reccommend a HKC panel by far the best alarm panel on the market, very reliable too

Would be very interested to hear with who & what you went for in the end.
Am in the same boat

Hi - same here! House nearly built but builder recommended not to wire it for alarm and to go with wirefree but I don't know anyone who has one? Can someone advise if they are any good and what about issues with batteries etc? I really don't know whether to get house wired or go wirefree so any advise would be appreciated!!

Wire-free works well: batteries last two or three (or more) years. Typically in a monitored system there's a yearly check-up (including any battery replacement) included in the price.

Having said that, if it's a new build (and still being built), I'd get a quote for a wired installation, as you then don't have any issue with batteries.

In my opinion, wired installations into established houses don't make too much sense: too much hassle to hide the wiring, and unsightly if it isn't hidden.

I hear this all the time. Since when is a builder an expert on alarm systems. My guess is that the first fix wiring is done and the electrician never bothered to spec for it. If the walls have not been slabbed I would get the electrician to wire it for you. Failing that the Europlex signet range of wireless would be hard to beat
