Gas fire place installation

Hi there,
Once again I'm looking for help from this great site and it's audience.
I finallly got around to buying the actual gas fire for the fireplace in my now 2 year old house. After finding it very difficult to actually source a plumber who was willing to install it (the 3rd who had actually agreed to do it stood me up twice and then sent me a txt message at 1 am. to tell me he was standing me up again the next morning) - His partner arrived today on time I might add ! I was delighted. The boss himself had called round on Tuesday to look at the job I might add and the fire I had bought.
After approx. 2 hours the very nice plumber told me he was almost finished with it and I nearly cried with joy. Next thing he hands me his phone and says the boss wants to speak to you. He then proceeded to tell me that I had purchased a fireplace for bottled gas (appearantly that's what the LPG on the box means) and that this wasn't going to work with my natural gas. My option would be to buy a conversion kit (in some distribution place in Finglas he reckons). I was so stunned I couldn't say anything and let him leave. Afterwards I thought to myself should he not have copped that I had bought the wrong fireplace when he first called round not after he installed the bloody thing ? I can hardly get him to rip it out now and then return it to B&Q ????
Any thoughts ?

The installer should have advised you before he fitted the fire- he's somewhat culpable. However, did he remove the fire from the box- would he have seen the "LPG" instruction? I'd imagine the conversion could add another €100 or so the the cost of the fire.

Hi Carpenter,
Thanks for your reply. It actuallys says LPG in big capital letters on the box of the fireplace. I'd be the first to put my hand up and say I'm clueless when it comes to stuff like that but that's why I'm paying someone who's supposed to know what they are doing ?
Assuming that I am able to get this conversion kit in some place in Finglas - the guy in B&Q said not every LPG fireplace can be converted - I'm sure he'll be looking for extra money to fit it then ?

Re: Gas fire - where can I sell it ?

Hi there,
I realize this might no longer belong here but not sure if I can actually move it.
I have to buy a new fireplace because no conversion kit is available for the below. Will put it back in it's box and try to sell it. Does anyone have any suggestions where ? I don't really want to go on Ebay would prefer something that's limited to Ireland. Remember they were advertising some website from the council or so where you could sell stuff ?

[broken link removed] have launched a service, but it's only a free trade service, so not what you're after here. You could try Buy & Sell, alternatively, I believe Boards.ie has a for sale forum.

Thanks Leo !
That's the one I was thinking off.Might have to resort to this one. Not sure anyone will buy it - are there people out there who still have bottled gas ????

M.

yes, loads of people use the bottled gas for these fires - think about all the people who dont have gas piped into their houses???? quite handy as u get an idea of how much gas they guzzle. its not the familar yellow tank thing... my mothers uses 2 large red tanks.

the place in finglas might be dublin heating distributors

Adverts.ie it is ... why not take it back to B&Q - just relace the olives in the comperssion joints and clean it up .. great thing about B&Q is that because it's so big you don't get the 'it's coming out of my pocket' attitude .. usually no questions asked.

Thanks Paddy,
Me being they way I am I rang B&Q and asked them would they take it back. They said no they couldn't resell it. Not sure what the olives  are but I will get the plumber to put it back in it's box and maybe chance it and go back to B&Q.
I just don't want to have to look at it much longer because it's laughing at me and my stupidity every day ...

Nice guide to compression fittings with pics,

http://www.diydata.com/techniques/plumbing/joints/compression/compression.htm

Basically the olives get crushed onto the pipe when you squeeze the fitting, since the fire hasn't been used if you replace the olives it will be as good as new.

thanks PaddyP !
Will print it for the plumber :)

Went to B&Q yesterday to purchase a fireplace for natural gas and guess what they just sold the last one on Sat and are not expecting any deliveries till January. So it might be a while until I get the LPG one taken out again.

Re: Gas fire - where can I buy one ?

Hi there,
The fireplace saga continues on ....
B&Q don't know when or if they will get a delivery of natural gas fireplaces any time soon - ordering is not possible (depending on who you speak to).
Does anyone know of a place on the northside that sells reasonable (we are talking aroudn 200 euro) natural gas fireplaces ?

Thanks very much
M.

Hi Clare66, welcome to AAM. In accordance with the [broken link removed], could you please confirm whether you have any association with this company?
Thanks,

hi leo
I used to work there approx a year ago. didnt realise there was a problem with reccommending somewhere or some one
regards clare

Hi Clare, there's no problem, just so long as people know where you're coming from. We just want to avoid people misleading AAMers by recommending their own services in the guise of a satisfied customer.
Thanks,
Leo
