we were in the domincan republic last summer although we were on the north of the island. Had a fab time. best value holiday.
if you've never been on a sun holiday before just plan plenty of trips to go on so you won't get bored lying by the pool. we went to paradise island. it was gorgeous and some deadly snorkelling in crystal clear water. also went to and did the dolphin swim - one of the best things i've ever done! not sure how far it is from santo domingo but if you want can root out some more info and let you know,

it seems a place that not too many people [i know] have gone to but yip - not a big man for sitting by the beach / pool all day so thanks for the 'getting away' bit. Some one told me recently i need a visa - is that true - and also to stay away from the pubs [more in the oldie music myself rather than 'clubbing' scene - but i'm only 30!] too late at nite - is that true? aparently dangerous to walk alone on dusky roads etc...

any advice appreciated
go raibh mile maith agat!

As regards pubs etc we stayed in an all inclusive hotel so we stayed within the hotel every night. although good few bars etc so didn't get too bored! nightlife on the quiet side which was perfect for us as we just wanted a holiday with some sun and to generally relax and not come home after 2 weeks knackered!
Visa is gotten at the airport. It costs $10 (US dollars) so make sure you have that in cash. Queues are fairly long but everyone in the same boat. theres a departure tax of $20 per person so make sure you keep enough cash. WE put the $40 in with the passprts and tickets so was there for leaving.
A word of advice as the country is extremely poor (majority of people live in houses size of a garden shed here) they are all waiting at the airport to 'help' you with cases etc and will literally have them out of your hand before you know it. Just be weary of them cos they'll say they want a dollar and then ask for more. A good idea would be to get some $1 bills to have to tip bus driver/ cab driver etc.
In general local people are lovely. Can't fault staff at our hotel at all, worked their asses off to make sure everyone had a good holiday and maids had room sparkling everyday!
Another thing to do would be to see if hotel you're staying in does massages etc. One of days on our hol lads went off golfing and myself and another girl we met went for a massage, $25! Bargain!!
Anything else you need to know just shout!!

also just remembered vodafone doesn't work over there. i was told prior to going it would but when i got there no joy. they had made mistake. As far as i can remember as i was giving out to them they told me they would set up an agreement with orange over there but don't know if this has been done so if you're with vodafone check that out.
My sister was there 2 yrs ago and her O2 phone worked fine.

denise,

was in egypt - similar story re getting out on the street anywhere - thats great to know - i got the feeling that our hotel is quite similar, [ and need to rest also] regarding the more than a few bars etc, to yours so dont think i/ we will be going too far, but everyone seems to suggest that you dont really step to far [or at all]outside the complex alone etc. I show 'her indoors' the info you've given and get back on to you.

Mant, many thanks

No problem at all. If you're flying with one of the charter airlines I would strongly recommend paying extra for extra leg room seats if you haven't already done that. We didn't and its a long 9 hours sitting with your legs squashed up and we're not particularly tall! At the end of the flight my knees were quite sore and stiff! We paid the extra (about $50 each) for the way home and stretched out and slept! Also could get up and go to toilet etc without having to ask someone else to move - bonus on a long flight where most people sleep so you could get stuck!

Oh yeah - do you need to get any 'jabs' or certified injections from a doc before you go?

thanks again

No, once you won't be staying outside resort you'll be grand. All water etc in resorts safe to drink (all filtered water) so theres nothing to avoid. They make these cocktails with rum (everyone drinks rum there - local drink) and coconut milk, absolutely gorgeous but be careful not to overdo it on them as coconut milk is a laxative!
