Clocking of cars

Hi all, had a strange experience yesterday trying to buy a car. I have been looking at a diesel import from england but the dealer said he was waiting for it to arrive. The car was being advertised at a certain price and as having 66k on the clock. I thought the price was a good deal given all considerations and i asked to have a look at the car. The dealer said to drop by the weekend as the car was due in today. I took a chance and called in last nigt and the car arrived while i was there... it was late so the chap i was talking to had gone home and the lad there let em sit in the car having told him i was interested in buying it. The thing is that the clok had almost 92k on it... now i havent menioned any names as i'd proberbly get AAM in trouble but does anyone think this car may be due a clocking?? it may be an honest mistake but i walked away and i am very suspecious... although its proberbly happening all the time
 
If it is in your area call back over the weekend and look again.

If they have clocked and try to sell to you as lower mileage call the police.
 
:) yeah it was defo miles, i thought it might be km but alas no. its none of those mentioned and in a different area of dublin than the naas road.. i might get a freiend to ring and ask if its for sale and see how many miles they say are on the clock

As long as it's accompanied by a ledger full of receipts and you follow it up by phoning the garages named and confirm dates/milage/work done matchs the service history. It's getting all too common to have false service books with clocked cars.
 
I have heard of cases where the person importing the carclocks the mileage upwards before importing the car thereby reducing its value on which he has to pay import duty. Once the duty is paid he clocks the mileage back (maybe even lower than the true mileage) and sells the car.

Get the AA to check the car before you buy it. It will give you peace of mind in the long run.
 
i walked away from the car folkes, better off i hope. I got my partner to ring up yesterday and ask about it. Clock has 91k on it, its advertised as for sale with 66k, yet she rang up nd was told it had 85k ??? its all very confusing and does smell of a rat...

I had same problem with a garage in galway that imports audi's from england.Turns out the guy is well known for it.The knock on effect is that dealers dont want to take trade in of imported cars because there is a risk that its been clocked and it has no history.
 
The NCT captures this info I think but does nothing with it. In fairness, how hard could it be to include the mileage on at the time of the NCT on the cert itself.
 
I know of some sales reps who have had mileage added to the clock for B.I.K. reasons

It's still bent! If a guy is clocking cars for tax reasons, why would you trust him not to clock it for a higher sale! Stay away from anyone who is clocking cars, regardles of how 'plausible' (aka tax evasion) their reasons are
