hi

just wondering if anyone has been to the Galapagos Islands (since last post in Aug) and whether it's best to organise trips from Quito or book from Ireland. Am interested in 1 level up from backpacking, with kayaking etc.. (on instinct - no!) many trips online appear quite expensive, at least $2000USD - I'm sure there must be some who offer it a bit cheaper without compromising too much on quality??

I've never been - but as far as I'm aware it's a conscious policy to keep the cost of going to the Galapagos Islands high in order to keep tourist numbers down.

I believe there's a fairly hefty tax to arrive in the Galapagos .. and the flights from mainland Ecuador to the Galapagos are very expensive .. so I think you're looking at $500+ before you even set foot on the islands

Supposed to be an amazing place though !
 
I was in Ecuador about 3 years ago @ that stage I ws told it was cheaper to book from Quito but anyone I met had spent min 1300 on their trips .And they were the backpackers
 
If you are going tothe Galapagos, it would be best to combine it with a holiday in another South American country like Peru or Ecuador. I was not in the Galapogas but I was in Peru earlier this year; fantastic country. I am kicking myself for not taking a side trip to these islands as it will be unlikely I will be back in this part of South America again. It is quite expensive to get there so it is a good idea to see and do as much as possible and stay as long as possible.
 
would love to go there, a paradise for wildlife, diving and a nature reserve.....
