Hi, I just bought a dvd from [broken link removed] I think they're based in florida, and the total cost of it was c. $22.00 (€17) inc. P&P and other shipping charges.
But then to my horror my friend told me that the UPS or FEDEX guy will probably look for a customs fee as the DVD was bought outside the EU.
I dont mind if it's too much but would anybody be able to give me a head-up
on roughly how much it'd cost so i don't have a heart attack on the doorstep.

Thanks, hope this is the right thread.

you'll be fine. the limit is I think 22e (that excludes postage). i've never been done for customs and i've bought lots of dvds from the US either through ebay or dvdpacific.com the main thing is really to try and avoid sites that use ups or fedex as they tend to state the actual cost of the items whereas the others above may take a more 'liberal' interpretation of the law?

For anything above the €22 limit, would 21% extra need to be paid to customs? (I'm asking because I was thinking of buying a camcorder from the US).

Have you de-zoned your DVD player ?

It's all ok jpd, i just wanted to know the money part. i've played NTSC on my dvd player before so i guess i did dezone but its so old i can't remember, thanks anyway:)

Did u buy the dvds all in one or individually? I'd say it'd be ok to buy them all from individual sites and get loads of seperate packages.
Also i don't know hoe to avoid fedex or ups 'cause there all the same aren't they i mean An Post used to deliver overseas packets but now it's something like ups or fedex.

i know the guy on ebay i've bought from usually 'adjusts 'the price as from what i can remember do dvdpacific. you can do separate orders (i never bother as i haven't been 'caught' yet) but then the postage charges increase significantly. of course cdwow are registered for vat in the eu so you'd have no problem buying stuff from them (sometimes their hong kong site has cheaper and newer dvds than the irish site). depending on how quick you want the dvds you can sometimes chose whether you use fedex or ups, the slower/cheaper shipping will usually be with u.s. postal service (usps) and will be less likely to attract customs/vat. let us know how you get on.

I will, can u tell me the japanese site of cdwow? CDwow are ok for delivery about 7 days but cdworld are cheaper and deliver in 3 days so that's wher i do shopping really. I was thinking of trying play.com via buy4now.ie when i get my 3v card. And yes i chose standard mail. Do you know if i would need to be present at my home when it's being delivered? I know with Fedex or UPS i would but ive never ordered with normal mail.

if you do get hit with customs ( unlikely) they add the carriage to the cost of item before the 21% and whack you for the total. in the case of a camcorder if they wrote 'left behind on holidays or something like that might work'

Thanks cuchulainn, but i suppose you'd have to bribe the customs officer for them to write that on it?:)
Would the carriage not be included in the delivery in the first place?

You're not making sense dereko, you mean fedex and ups take a liberal interpetation? not the usps.
Why would i stay away from a company thet tells me the exact cost? That's what i want, i dont want people to hide costs.

I just bought a DVD and CD from cduniverse.com and i hope i dont get attacked by customs!
total cost is $28.49 icl. delivery thats about €22

Article in paper at weekend said customs have staff in all the sorting offices at the moment and are hitting people hard for this. I have a memory though that the limit is circa €40 euro no?

snakebite - the point i was making was that fedex and ups definitely charge you for customs whereas items posted using the us post office tend not to, so using the slowest option with dvd pacific which is the post office is 'safer' from a customs point of view and does not take long at all (maybe a week - ten days). also, the sites i've used tell you exactly what they're charging you but may put a different amount onto the green declaration on the cover of the package. obviously revenue are putting extra resources into the post offices at the moment but come the new year there is less likelihood of you being hit with customs charges. anyway please post back to see how you got on with your packages.

I got hit by customs this week, after 2 years of buying things outside the eu. i was charged €20 - the package was marked as a gift from Hong Kong. i rang up Dhl cmplaining that i had to pay vat and duty on a gift but i was told it didnt matter if it was a gift or not, anything worth over $40 you will be charged on.:(

purplealien - was that with the normal us post service or priority mail (fedex, ups)?

The limit for goods of negligible value is €22, but the limit for a gift from a private person outside the EU to another private person in Ireland is €45. The gift limit is where there is no trade, i.e. the second person is not paying the first for the gift
