I have done a search on this board for threads on the Glasnevin area and I have found it difficult to find any information.

So I was just looking for feedback from people who live or work in the area, as to how they find it?

We have just sold our appartment in Santry and gone sale agreed on a house off Griffith Avenue.

We have driven around and got a good feel for the area, but I have no idea what transport into town is like in the mornings?
I would probably bus it, how long would it take?

Where's the nearest shopping center, is it the Omni in Santry?

Anyone recommend somewhere local for a pint? any other comments?

any feedback really appreciated :)

Depends on where you are on Griffith Avenue...at what end? There are some nice pubs around Glasnevin and Drumcondra alright...PM me if you want specifics..

I used to work in Glasnevin but it was a long time ago. It's still a lovely mature area. The nearest shopping centre would be Omni. Lots of good pubs at that time anyway. Try the Gravediggers near the cemetry. Used to be a great favourite.

I live there myself - which park of the avenue are you referring to. Traffic down Mobhi Road and Drumcondra Road in teh moring can be very bad (thankfully don't have to do it myself). Watering holes - Fagans, Tolka House, Gravediggers, Cat & Cage, Ivy House and of course Andersons on The Rise - very good selection depending on what you're looking for. You can eat out in the Chilli Banana, Il Corvo, Jamuna, The Washerwomans etc etc. Plenty of scholls around with fairly good reps.

If you can be more specific on lcation I can post back

Thanks for all the comments and feedback so far.

I'm located over towards Tolka as opposed to the Drumcondra side.

North of Addison, near DCU. Where is the Washerwomans? Jamuna? I know where the other places are, I've been in chilli banana, was quite nice, Il Corvo looks really cute but I've never tried it out :)

Jamuna is on the main Drumcondra road, opposite Fagins'. The Washerwoman is on Glasnevin Hill, opposite Bon Secours Hospital. Hope that helps. Ciaran

Not sure if you mean Tolka Rovers? If so then we're not too far away from each other. Jamuna is the Indian opposite Fagans, the Washerwomans is on Glasnevin Hill aka Washerwomans Hills (opposite the Met Office).

Il Corvo is good - often need to book ahead - same guy owns Chilli Banana by the way. A word of caution... if you are in a group and ordering plenty of wine... might be worth keeping a count on your corks (several people I know have been charged for the extra bottle). If you have tried Andersons you might be interested in trying his new Creperie on Carlingford Road also - very good.

I'm another one from Glasnevin - near DCU, lived here way too many years to mention and moving upto Northwood, Santry.

Griffith Avenue. Now which part? Towards Griffith Avenue extension and Mobhie Road way? Or near Ballymun Rd itself? Or on the extension and more upto Cremore and Violet Hill direction?

If you are near DCU, then buses that go down Ballymun Rd and onto Mobie Rd are 4, 11, 13, 13a, 19a. The 4 and 19a go straight down towards Phisboro and Constitution Hill, then into town.
The 11 goes down Homefarm Rd onto Drumchondra Rd. The 13 goes down Ballymun Rd, Mobie Rd, back onto Ballymun Rd, around the Met Office and Washerwoman's Hill, The Addison Lodge, and onto Botanic Rd, swings a left onto Whitworth Rd and then onto Drumchondra Rd. The 13a goes down Ballymun Rd, onto Mobie Rd, then onto Drumchondra Rd.

The quickest route by far is the 4 and 19a. Takes from DCU 15-20 mins to get to Constitution Hill. I normally jump off here and walk to work. The next quickest is the 11 - it takes about 30-35/40 mins or so unless it's heavy traffic to hit town then followed by the 13 and 13a - they swop places depending on traffic. I'd say the 13a is just a wee bit faster than the 13 going into town.
The worst day for traffic is Tuesdays. Don't know why but it always is up around here.

Drumchondra Rd going home is where most which holds up the traffic. Can be jammers at times. If possible go home via the 4 or 19a - easiest said than done as you know yourself you just want to take the first bus home. Normally it takes about 30 or so mins to get home from say Westmoreland St.

The biggest and nearest shopping centre would indeed be Omni Park. But depends on where you are exactly there's a good few smaller local shops in the area, eg Mobhi Road and St. Pappins Rd.

The Metro will be stopping outside DCU just north of Albert College Park.

So ye sold yer apartment eh? Seems we're swopping - I'm buying an apartment there.:D

Courtlands onekeano - er I knew someone from there.. yeep! Longtime ago now..
Right to get back onto topic - Newkid30 - the Metro is as you know also stopping at Northwood, so you'll be able to go upto visit your old mates, IKEA and Homebase on it and back home.. and I'll be able to pop on it and down to see the parents!:)

Hello, Glasnevinites.
Have taken particular interest in the discussion on Glasnevin for the following reason. Over the past few years, I had carried out research on the history of Glasnevin, as it's the location of the Claremont Institution (est. 1816), a school founded by Dr Orpen (granduncle of the renowned artist, Sir William Orpen). That school still exists, in form of St Clare's Home, Griffith Avenue. Up to the 1950s, there used to a large demesne of Claremont, with the 'avenue' leading from Ballymun Road (near Enterprise Ireland) to the school (St Clare's Home). That area is now bisected by Griffith Avenue. You should visit the quaint church - St Mobhi, tucked down at the end of Church Avenue, lined on one side by cottages.

Appropriately, the book "The Avenue", containing a chapter on Glasnevin, has been launched last Monday at the Botanic Gardens, really beautiful for walks or a place to chill out (free of charge!!).
If interested in obtaining a copy of "The Avenue" (by R.Pollard, published by Denzille Press), just PM me.
Enjoy Glasnevin, and you're really lucky to reside in such an beautiful area, even by south-side standards...!

Thanks for all the comments, it's been a really great help :)

Aurnia, where abouts in Santry are you moving to? We loved it there I have to say, lovely settled community, found the people really friendly and sociable.

Good facilities too, the Mandalay in Northwood is lovely, as is the restaurant in Crowne Plaza, Mmmmmmmmm!!! My folks treated us to a meal there, bit pricey but so worth it!

best of luck with your move!

The 4 or 19 seems the best option buswise, anything to get away from the traffic in Drumcondra!! At least I won't have to batle through Whitehall anymore in the mornings!

Hi Newkid30

I'm moving into Parklands as owner occupier. Nearly there now, just waiting for 2nd snag and completion letters - completions are happening faster than for yet Lymewood crowd.

I only joined here (as in AAM recently) to give some info to some Carrington people and found the Lymewood and Parklands threads here in May/June and when ye all went off here or we would have "met before". Badger here (you'll remember him I'm sure!) set up a Northwood forum on Neighbours and Sue M set one up for Parklands.
There's now another forum for Heywood Court as well. Some of yer old buddies from here are on the forums now! Plus a few from Carrington are now posting.

Hoping all goes well and I'll take to living in Santry. I'm staying in D.9 anyhow - near to the folks but enough away that I'm not too near and that's the main thing!:D

I haven't been to the Crown Plaza or Mandalay yet so looking forward to that nosh up!

Without taking over this thread and it going off topic yeah the 4 and the 19a . Remember it's the one with the "A" in it - if you take the 19 you'll end up the other side of Glasnevin - Cremore and going upto Hillcrest and onto Cedarwood - Bono's old haunt and then onto McKee Rd.

If you are nearer to Washerwomans's Hill (were the Met Office is & Enterprise Ireland, Addison) then you can take the 19 and 83. Both go down into Phisboro - the 19 as the 19a but the 83 goes straight down onto Church St and then onto the quays.

I'm hoping the 4 gets a proper stop up near my new home before too long as I much prefer that route and will walk the 20 mins from Parklands to get to work..
Don't be telling me about the battle with Whitehall - the 16a bus route has never been my fav - I hardly ever take it and only when necessary to go to Omni but shortly bah.

Anyway shout if you want anymore info - like if you need (or for the future) the local schools - both primary and secondary.

I am local (as in it's home home) to here, so know all the area's pretty much.

Glasnevin is great location, 10 mins to town. Nearest SC is Omni but Tesco in clearwater Fingals is massive and probably just as close.

If you want a nice pint go to the Grave diggers (dont be put off the name) It's one of the oldest pubs in Dublin...You cant beat the beer garden, you can actualy sit out in a private green in the middle of a small estat and sip your pints.....Funny but the ambiance of being in the pub is still with you

For ease of shopping by residents of Glasnevin and Drumcondra areas, it would be very hard to beat TESCO, Clearwater. Easy in, easy out, no parking charges, great space, best fuel prices in town, a carwash, post office, kids shops, a fastfood, ...yep that TESCO is tops.

+1 on everything said here about glasnevin, i'm born and bred there, just a bit further up the road now than where I started..!

Clearwater is great for the shopping and you have lidl and aldi on the north road in finglas for the value option. There should be a lidl opening beside homebase at Santry cross soon.

Deffo the grave diggers for some pints but that might be a fair walk if your on griffith avenue extension - try the Ivy house as well, on the drumcondra road or fruther down fagans for some nice pints. Tolka house at the bottom of washerwomans hill would suit oyu as well.

Andersons in the rise is great for a nice sunday lunch with a glass of wine or some take out meats and cheese. The shops on the corner of saint pappins and ballymun road will have everything you need for your day to day shoping and the euro spar has loads more besides.

I used to walk home from work (when i was based in city centre) in less than an hour. You could easily walk from O'Connell street to the top of Glasnevin hill in about 45 mins which will beat the bus (i've timed it...!!!) and it's great excercise. Although it probably much of a muchness as to which bus you take but the 13 does take the longest as it comes up whithworth road and gets stuck there.

enjoy
