Windows for New Build

I'm building a new home and have started pricing windows. Was going to go for timber frame windows but the prices are very high in comparison to the PVC. Basically I dont want to end up with cheap looking white windows but don't want to pay a fortune for timber ones, any suggestions?

Have you talked to a local joiner? I had hardwood traditional sliding sash windows made to order for about €900 per window in the Northwest. I don't know how this compares to PVC as I never priced PVC but it seemed OK compared to the price of mass-manufactured timber windows from various suppliers at the time.

I put in the sliding sash windows in Upvc brown oak from Dungannon Windows in the North. Look excellent and maintenance free. Need to get up close to knoww they were pvc

Well now that's a bit of an exaggeration, surely! :) Personally I don't like this fake wood finish, you can see from a mile off that it's not the real thing as the shape of the window frames screams PVC. To me anyway.

AJL,

did the PVC wood effect sliding sash window cost much more than the standard wood grain windows?

Timber would be more expensive and there is the maintance issue painting varnish every other year, you can get a timber window with an aluminium exterior face, however timber looks better and also works well frm an imsulation point of view you get less condensation with natural materials.
Also its envoirmentally friendly from a renewable source.

I think those brown wood effect PVC windows look terrible and really spoil the look of the house. The white looks OK. Any house with that colour window would put me off buying because you can tell it's not wood.

Thats what this and most threads are about - opinions. To quote the OP "Basically I dont want to end up with cheap looking white windows".

What one person considers nice another doesn't. If woodgrain PVC was so abhorrent to people then there would be no market for them but obviously a lot of people must like them as a lot of them are being installed

Folks,

i maybe biased but anybody that has seen the windows have said they are beautiful. I will post a picture in the next couple of days.

AJL,

Looking forward to seeing those pics as I have just gotten a quote off that company!
