Porsche 911

Hi all....

Has anyone had experience of owning a 911 of any type ? It's been a dream of mine for quite sometime and I'm due to look at one tomorrow....I've read all the reviews which, as always, are brilliant but by the same token the vast majority of 5-10 year old 911's appear to have a high number of owners. This turnover in ownership would concern me although the one I'm due to view has two previous which is not bad for an eight year old car !

Any thoughts ?

hi there i have had 6 911,s my advice would be to steer clear of targas and convertibles due to the amount of water leaks and general noise,my biggest suprise with 911,s is how flimbsy all the electrics are and general roughness which they are to drive .but on a postive note there isnt a face that isnt lookin at you, young kids ,old kids old people ,hot chicks, you may be having the crap rattled out of you but you look cool !!!! the amount of owners will be purely down to the drive but each owner enjoyed them

No chance they are looking at you wondering why anyone in his right mind would want to drive a car that has water leaks, flimsy electrics, is noisy, and is generally rough to drive?? OTOH they might just think you are a sad poser who needs to get a life.:D

There's always an ugly person or a person going through a mid life crisis behind the wheel of a 911! It's true, because as the other person said, the drive is rotton!

well better an ugly person in a 911 than an ugly person driving a sad people carrier that his wife made him buy !! which seems to be very popular these days .dont think there is a bloke alive who has never dreamt of owning a porsche or a ferrarai at some stage

You're only having your leg pulled! I've always fancied a Lamborghini meself (in yellow).

I haven't. If I wanted one I'm sure I could probably buy one, of some description.

However, I don't really go mad over cars. I'd rather spend the money paying off my mortgage so I can retire early. Each to their own I suppose.

Check out http://www.porsche-club-ireland.ie for a great group of like-minded porsche owners. Great place to actually buy a car too as these folk are obsessive about caring for their cars.

As for the 911? Well it's a real love/hate kind of car. If you actually like driving then you'll probably enjoy them. Take one for a spin and see if it does anything for you. Personally i think they are wonderful cars but Ireland doesn't have the best roads to appreciate them.

Yip - Can't wait for my midlife crisis.

Enjoy the spin!

Thanks all for your opinions (and bacchus for the PM).....If it's a mid life crsis I've been having it since I was 16 ! For me it's about how the car drives and particlarly how amazing they actually look. I don't need a flash car for people to look at me...that happens already...I'm an astrotech droid driving a car for god's sake !! ;) I drove the car on Saturday.....Fantastic alright and I spent the rest of the weekend trying to justify it to myself but between the likely running costs and ramps I've decided that it will have to remain as much of a dream as getting invited up to Halle Berry's hotel room...:(

Thanks again....

My advice....go for it! Justification is simple - you really want it and have been dreaming about it for donkey's...Best of luck!!

Surely Halle Berry has some say in this matter? Or are you referring to the car?

Like many others - and yes, I am vacuous - anyone who claims otherwise is, is, is.........even more vacuous ! - I just got the 911 itch to scratch, and after a bit of round-the-houses, I got a really, really nice 87 one.

First thing: no of owners. It's a fact of life, especially here, that if you buy one, and don't use it, you'll suffer the Mother & Father of buyer's remorse. Likewise if you do use it, but just not enough. So, they do change ownership a lot. Mine had, iirc, 10 owners. It mattered not a jot - the car was good, and passed scrutiny by two different Porsche afficienado's, so it didn't bother me, and I became owner 11. Didn't bother the next guy, either, and he became no 12, about 14 mths later........

The cars can be reasonably bought, insurance is not too painful (so long as it's not a very recent one.....), but I have to say, the annual car tax, at Eur1343, is a major, major, bummer. I'd much prefer to put 1343 p.a. into the car, rather than the exchequer, every year. Or most of it, anyway. So, every week, without so much as sitting in it, you'll be coughing up Eur26 every week to Brian Cowen. In my case, it also works out at just under Eur1.00 a mile, as well...............

Surprisingly, the car is roomy inside, and my wife and I could bring our two kids. Not so cute, however, was the fact that it had no power steering, and I wasn't enamoured with the clutch, either. But, as they say, 'they're all like that'.........with 3.2l out the back though, you won't be changing gear all that often.

In the end, I sold it, reluctantly, as it had a repair bill coming up that I just couldn't justify, so I passed that on as discount to the next guy who did spend the money on it, and he ended up with a very, very good car. I still miss it, and will go back and try another one again, but a bit newer this time. Yes, the electrics are a bit, mmmm, 'eccentric' ?, but contrary to popular opinion, mine had a very good heater, and the car was enjoyable. There's something special about a car that could just make you go out in the drive and look at it..............probably too many past memories of Billy Coleman etc..etc...

And the noise. Ah yes, it's only in recent years that the likes of Aston etc have re-engineered sound as a component in the car experience, and in a 911, you're getting the Original of the Species.

A friened of mine used to service one for a guy.

He was about 6 foot and reckoned he didn't really fit.

I have found the same with the likes of MG and other 2 seaters

I saw a 1991 911 Carrera 2, 60K Miles on sale at http://www.ibcjapan.co.jp/ for €11,900, add on €4,000 VRT and probably another €1K in shipping. Total price roughly €16k. A similar car on sale at carzone.ie would set you back €25K, this one has 100K Miles.

Hi,

I owned a 911 (993) model which was the last of the air cooled engines - an absolute beautiful looking and sounding car.

The above Porsche Club contacts will give you good advise. Check out the following website: [broken link removed]
for tips on purchasing a 911

Unfortunately the owner of the company in the above website, Howard Landridge, passed away a few months ago.
