Looking for recommendation for this weekend. 2 adults, 2 kids.
Preferably no more then couple of hours from dublin.
Any child friendly hotels up north?

Has anyone stayed in the in monaghan and can review with respect to my first post?
(hope this isnt viewed as a bump!)

glendalough hotel - lovely walk and you can have them climb and bike round the lake if they want to.

The 2 kids are aged 3 and 1 so the hiking and hillwalking isnt high on the agenda yet. :) Its mainly swimming pools and leisure centre Im looking for..

Its looking like either the hillgrove or Im told the quality hotel on the oranmore roundabout in galway is good with leisure centre and babysitting facilities.

stayed here before it might be a bit far from Dublin though

2 kids, 4 and 18 months at the time.

try www.hastingshotels.com, the newcastle hotel is in a lovely spot right beside the beach ( november and all that) tollymore forest park, and outdoor amusement parks, but again dont know whats open in winter. www.4seasonshotel.ie in carlingford might be ok too. easy drive from dublin and near to newry for christmas shopping.

Ive been in the 4seasons in carlingford, thought it very nice but wouldnt have thought it suited for my purpose, more for a relaxing w/e away. will chase up the hastings tmrw, nice one.

Just found a decent set of links on [broken link removed] for family hotels, should get something there.

Hi Car,

I've stayed in the Quality Hotel in Oranmore and whilst it was ok I preferred the Quality in Wexford. I found the trip to Galway a bit far and when your kids are 3 and 1 you/they might appreciate the short trip to Wexford (are we there yet, are we there yet? :) ). I found the restaurant in Wexford to be better although it is a few years since I was in Galway.

I got a text some time back where they were offering the following:

"Stay any 2 nights between now and Dec 18th 2BB1D €99 pps or 3BB2D €149 pps. To book call 1850 605 705 - limited availability".

I see the says €139 for the 3BB2D option.

Wexford is a nice enuf town and the leisure centre and swimming pool are great.

Nice one sue, booked wexford for sat and sun. Didnt really want to go as far as galway anyway.

Hi Car,

One thing I forgot to mention is that you might like to ask for a room not on the roundabout side of the hotel. It might not affect you much because you will be staying at a week-end but Mon to Fri the noise of the traffic can be quite loud and starts very early. They are usually very helpful when you put in a request for the quiet side of the hotel.

Enjoy your break and be careful of that disc parking in Wexford town.

I stayed here for a night in August and thought it was a horrible hotel.
Would never go back.
Food was dreadful, breafast was inedible.
Noise was awful from the road.
The bar/reception area was as child unfriendly as I have ever seen.
Having stayed in the one in Clonakility I was expecting cheap and cheerful bit did not like this place one bit.

We stayed in the quality In Wexford only last month, and i have to say we couldnt fault it at all. We brought two kids aged 4 and 8, and the whole place was so friendly to the children, great playground, swimming pool, and i was really impressed with the kids menu. It had decent options and not just sausage/chicken nuggets and chips. For our 8 year old to say it was "the nicest mashed potato ever" is really saying something!! teh food was really good, room realy clean. they have a kids club on saturday morning and Saturday evening, and on the Saturday night we were in the bar with the children until 3am!!! there were lots of kids there.
Also we were at the front of the hotel but werent bothered by traffic at all.
On the Saturday we took a drive out to Hook Head, really nice.
Enjoy!

well, it was so-so. As one lad in work said on the thursday, once you see the word quality in an establisments name, alarm bells should go off. Food wasnt great, waitress service was very poor with several excuses about how busy they were when we had to repeatedly ask for our order. Pool was nice, playground nice and selfservice brekky was nice, but theyre the basics and its hard to go wrong there really.
We brought the kids down to the creche on the sat morning to leave them in for us to have a couple of hours break. Both kids have been in creches and we'd like to think we've seen all sorts of minders but the young one who had over 12 kids in there just didnt want to know, seemed like she was nursing a hangover, so we took the kids straight back out.
Bar looked like it was alright on both nights but we didnt stay, had the laptop down with some movies so up to the room with some drinks. Went for drives both days and enoyed the scenery. Visited some friends who said we should have stayed in the ferrycarrig. All in all, a nice break in wexford but I dont think we'd go back to the (in our opinion) not so quality, quality hotel.

Hi Car,

Its a pity you didn't enjoy it. You should have complained about the waitress service not being up to scratch and the creche does not appear to have been meeting health and safety requirements. We didn't have to use the creche so can't comment on that but we found the food and service to be good. You will see yourself from the previous thread and this that there are more favourable posts than disappointed ones.

All things being relatives there's a [broken link removed]between the Ferrycarrig and [broken link removed]. Looks like it's nearly €240 difference.

Hi Sue,
Not sorry we went or stayed there, we werent looking for the ritz. When I complained about the service the excuse was that the waiting staff were also looking after room service, but I didnt think that my problem though.
The staff were all very nice and the place was as clean as it could be for what was a very family orientated hotel, ie, lots of kids. The creche episode put us off a little, maybe there was another member of staff on break, we didnt ask, so I maybe doing them an injustice. We were happier in the end we didnt leave them in as we had a good laugh with the 2 girls in the playground.

As an side, and to give credit where its due. Had a lovely lunch in what looked like a recently renovated whites(?) hotel in the town centre on saturday, think it was called esperanza, staff very nice and food was top notch. No kids menu so asked for a carbonara for the 2 girls in 2 small bowls. 2 huge bowls came over, way too much, but come bill time the manager only charged for one half portion for both as he said he had kids himself and knew they wouldnt eat it all but they were the smallest bowls they had. Now that was quality. Carbonara was mmmm btw. ;)
