Washing Machine tripping switch

Could be shorting which is obviously dangerous. Best to get a sparks on the case in my opinion.

Have a Servis Washer Dryer that does this too - but only when I try to run the dryer. Functions fine as a washing machine.

Anyone know the reason for this? As soon as I turn on the washing machine it trips the socket switch

You could have a hairpin or something metalic creating a short. It might be worth taking the back of the washer and have a look for anything obvious which shouldn't be in the back of your machine before you call in a repair man.

Make sure the machine is unplugged before you remove the back cover off it.

If it happens immediately on turning it on from the wall socket point, then it could be as simple as a damaged cable (machine sitting on it?).
If it's immediately from turning on at controls, then it is most likely the actual controls or timer motor (not heater or motor, as it doesn't come on until water fills). The repair is best approached by calling an appliance service technician.

had this problem a number of years ago. got sparkies out. said the washing machine was the problem. however, even when we got a new one we still had the problem. turned out that the main fuse needed to be changed to a bigger one. obviously extra electrical outlets etc had been added over the years and the fuse just wasn't sufficient to support the power requirements. check it out. we've never had the same problem since. best of luck.

Did an electrician recomment this course of action? Was s/he reliable and maybe RECI registered? Arbitrarily adding a bigger fuse just becase there is a heavier load is not necessarily a good idea!
