Removing screws from doorhinges

For some reason the hinges on our back door are beginning to perish to such an extent that one of the lower hinges (there are 4 in total - it's a half door) has broken in two. I want to replace all of them before they all snap. However, the screws that are on the doorframe part of the hinge are refusing to budge. (The screws that are on the door itself are moving fine). I would guess that they were put in with an electric screwdriver and may have been over-screwed as there seems to be no grip at all with my humble hand held screwdriver. I've given all the hinges a spray with WD40 but the screws in the frame refuse to budge. Any tips on getting around this problem?
 
You can get screw removal bits to fit power drivers, but seeing as you're using a "humble hand held screwdriver", I'm guessing you don't own one. Any chance of borrowing one, or perhaps this is the opportunity you've been waiting for to tool up?

1. Sometimes a tiny turn to the right is enough to release the screw.

2. You can buy a bit called a screw remover which drills a hole in the screw and removes it at the same time.
 
Have you tried a bigger handled screwdriver?

Make sure the end of the screwdriver fits the screw exactly.
 
thanks. will try to get my hands on the screw remover bit. Have a pretty decent drill so I'll give it a lash.
 
very important to get a goog hold on the screw, i have used a srewdriver and held at an angle tap with a hammer gently to remove gunge from the screw tip, it can give you a better purchase but it sounds like the screws are mangled.

A mini vice grips can be very effective if you can get a grip on the head of the screw (perhaps by levering it up a little with a screwdriver).
 
you should use a steel bit to bore out the screw heads the hinge will pop off ,there will be a piece of the shank off the screw still protruding which you can wind out with a vice grips, the new screws will have to have a wider shank sso as to get a fresh grip
