thinking of buying a car now a 05 or 06 astra or focus. would i be better off waiting till the new year to buy would the price be cheaper then? all the car showrooms say there already reduced for the new year. i dont believe them. looking for advice

All the advice is to buy twords the end of a week and also twords the end of a month as salesmen have targets to reach and can be prepared to go farther to get a deal. So now is a perfect time I'd say.

Sales were down 12% last month. I can't imagine they've picked up any this month.

05 or 06 Focus or Astra. I'd imagine there are literally hundreds of them to choose from out there right now. So decide for yourself what your low ball figure is and then set about finding a dealer who is motivated enough to sell you one for that price.

If after negotiating they are still not budging on your offer price, just thank them for their time and walk away. If they want to deal they will call you back.

PS - you are right not to trust what the salesmen tell you.

personally I believe the best value is buying outside the car dealers, direct with someone selling through buy n' sell etc, especially if its a newer car you're after, these days - relative to years ago - new cars have very little problems so the warrantry advantage from the garage is muted, just make sure you get a well qualified mechanic to check out your new purchase.
I bought private in January and paid about €2k below TODAYS price, not an issue so my "expensive" 6 month 2nd hand car warranty would have been a waste

Agreed. A nearly new low mileage car still under the manufacturers warranty purchased privately is ideal.

Ask your bank for the trade value of the make and model you are after, and look to get the car very slightly cheaper than that.

There was an article in the newspaper a few days ago about the savings that can be made by buying second hand cars in the UK or the North. Although you will have to pay VRT upon arrival in Ireland, the huge price differential more than compensates.

Apparently 60,000 2nd hand cars similarly imported so far this year. Car dealers expect a glut of 2nd hand cars, and a significant price drop in the 2nd hand market in 2007 because of this.

Best savings come on high end cars, Mercs, BMWs etc, (up to Eur 10,000), but almost all models will be cheaper if bought in this way. According to article UK cars are generally of higher spec and better maintained than Irish second hand cars.

Yes this 60,000 number is massive. If this continues SIMI will be looking for changes to VRT.

didnt explian myself earlier i have a car to trade in. so buying private seems a lot of hassle with selling mine private. i would rather trade in.
